I learned this afternoon my medical doctor dies on Saturday. He had been sick for some months and I was scheduled to see him this week. I called to confirm and learned the sad truth. He was a fun guy, a real character. Always complaining about insurance company interference in medicine. He practiced in Santa Fe for 60 years and was known by just about everyone. I shall miss him as will much of nothern NM.
Now I have to find a replacement. That is not easy in this state.

Some times it takes a while to find a new one that you click with..You may have to try more than one.

Took a long time to find my present PCP...he is a gem, always fighting the ins. company for the right for him to practice medicine instead of them trying to tell me that I am taking too much of a particular med. (that they pay out the butt for, or so they say). Fortunately he is a good deal younger than either me or my wife so there is a good chance of him out living me. Good luck in finding the right person for your needs.

Sorry for your loss. I had to interview 3 before I found my present PCP. And this is after reading the reviews and out of a couple of thousand doctors.

My doctor retired a couple years ago. I didn't like his replacement, and had to hunt for another.
I told my dentist he can't retire.

You'll find another Doctor, but you'll not replace one of those "OLD SCHOOL" Doctors. My Doctor worked very hard to find more affordable medications for me ,when I lost my job funded health care, and all without my asking; most Doctor couldn't give a damn, as long as you have the copay...
Sorry for your loss, and good luck, as you hunt for a Doc who sees people, and not just $$$$$.

Ask his staff or family who he had respect for.
My wife worked in a gastroenterologist office and asked all the doctors who was their physician... four out of eight doctors gave the same name, we couldn’t be happier.

He was sick for a long time and saw no patients. Then he died suddenly. The office closed the day he died. There is no way to get ahold of anyone. He was a Specialist. There are not many other Neurologists in Santa Fe. I believe there is one and he is also quite old. I do not want to have to go to Albuquerque. So, it is not easy.

That's sad news, Tosh. I hope you find someone as great as he was.

Sorry to hear that. My former doctor practiced till he was more than 80, then retired only because he had his own medial issues to deal with. I managed to find a great doctor to replace him. Fortunately the old guy is still doing alright and spends hs time gardening.

Saw my doctor today. The pressure from the insurance companies has him near burnout. He is seriously considering going to a subscription system. $480/year and no insurance or any other payments.

Fascinating. Are there many doctors that do this? What would he do about Medicare? I haven't heard about any other doctors doing this. He's really smart and passionate about medicine. He's talking about retiring and moving to a 65 foot catamaran in the Caribbean. He owns the practice that just got a new building and employees about a dozen doctors. I hope that he really goes for it. He would just ignore Medicare. $480 x 500 subscribers would be $240k in income. The rest of the practice could go either way. He is good enough to stand on his own. He could easily give better care even with a thousand patients.

Kind of like he's his own insurance plan. 480/year for all the office visits you want. Buffet style. Don't imagine that could include any surgeries, though.

I was finally able to reach someone at the clinic. They are trying to hire an administrator to handle all the paperwork and files. The old doc had 30,000 patient files. They are also searching for a new MD to resume the clinic's practice.

Good luck in your search. A bad doctor is more trouble than help, hope you'll find someone just as good.
Over here, a lot of the older folks just stick with the doctor that's nearest to them. Back under communist rule you couldn't freely choose your practitioner and you were assigned to one based on where you lived (boroughs or even streets). It's a remnant of that age, some people are still uncomfortable going elsewhere and afraid to face their "obvodak" ("district doctor") even if they're unhappy. It's becoming less common these days though.

My Dr was chosen when I moved back home, after I asked him 50 questions, he's in his 40s and his name is Bradley he asked are you interviewing me, Yep I said, didn't want an old geezer that would die on me, and during my senile days I"lol remember your name. Got a big laugh out of that. Down the road I missed 3 appointments, when I went in he was pissed at me. Told him Doc my dog ate my water line under the house and had to call a plumber. He looked at my wife and said he's crazy, wife said no Doc he drove the dog crazy.!
