Having dinner at a restaurant tonight, there was a party of 10 all engrossed in their cellphones through the meal all in their late 40’s to 50’s.
An old codgerly looking guy that appeared to be the patriarch, looked bored as they were all doing their thing.... it looked like he was probably an old vet, I made eye contact a few times and thought that I should strike up a conversation with him....Kind of sad that people rob themselves of productive conversation and instead are engrossed in updating their Facebook status or such nonsense.

that is rude behavior I do not tolerate.
When people do that to me, I get up and move or leave figuring they want to be alone.
The friends of my generation do not do that.

Cell phones are a great example of the ultimate hopelessness of humanity. Here is a simple device which means that each of us has access to the sum total of all knowledge ever accumulated by western civilization. It also provides more methods of communication, from across the room to across the planet, than any other generations of our species have ever had. Each of us can carry this simple device around in our pocket.
In other words, cell phones should mean we're more informed and connected than ever. We've somehow managed to use them mostly for trading misinformation and socially isolating ourselves.

When I'm with anyone, the phone goes on silent and gets put away. At the dinner table, there is absolutely no phones allowed under any circumstance

F.U. Steve Jobs! You wanted to turn people’s brains into mush and so you did. Rot in Hell, schmuck!
I don’t have a cell/smart phone, but I did have an iPod Touch. One day back in 2015 I put it in a bag and smashed it into a million pieces with a hammer. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Also, ever since switching to a healthy vegan diet I avoid restaurants as they are just fat dispensaries full of aspirational diners publishing instant photos of all the dreck on a plate that will be giving them problem bowel movements in the short and cancer and heart disease in the long.

I have resisted the Smart Phone and stick with the old Flip. It accepts Text and is laborious about it.

Being angry with cellphones is so...10 years ago. (Don't get me started on privacy and facial recognition software) I hear you on the facial recognition nonsense.... I frequently get reminders that I need to set it up, I don’t doubt that the powers that be have already catalogued my mugshot. I can’t say that I am angry at cellphones, probably saddened that people rob themselves of enjoying time interacting with each other... especially around family.

If only people would use cellphones for what they were intended: communication over long distance. If only people would use TV for what it was intended: dissemination of information. Sadly both are used for entertainment and very little else. By the way, my definition of intended.

I'm with you, John...fortunately I have few friends and those that I do have are more interested in our conversation or lack of it, just enjoying the time spent together is sufficient.

I am in 100% agreement with this. While our society does abuse cell phones, I positively hate television. Coming from a culture of big families that sat together out on the front porch in the cool of the evening and talked after a big supper, it breaks my heart to see what families have become today, and the self-imposed isolation of individuals, both young and old. My dad was the oldest of 8 kids raised on a poor dirt farm in Kentucky, and my mom was the youngest of 12, also raised on a Kentucky tobacco farm in the next county over. My childhood was one of communication, family, work, clear personal identity and great emotional security. I do not see that today

I think it's wise to judge whether something is good or bad not on what it's like going in, but on what it's like coming back out.
I say TV's the most harmful device out there not by counting the number of violent acts or crimes in the shows (what it's like going in), but on what TV makes people say and do after it's been turned off.

New phone on the way first one in many years. When I was working I could not have done my job without a phone and trust me I have done it both ways, The old way look at machine drive back find the right book and get the thing going three days later. With a phone look at machine order parts on the spot get the machine going the next day. Create a stock order for a customer on a computer with internet access in the parking lot. Hand write a order and turn it in the next day. It is a tool if you are smart enough to use it as one. Family values has nothing to do with a TV or phone that is just silly talk. If you cant distinguish reality from the TV seek help. The phrase is multi tasking good riddance to the party line phone and five TV channel line up. Goodbye paper and hello online inventory and ordering sure beats the heck out of hand written receipts where you pull the crank to get your three copies and ordering stuff via FAX. Like micronuts said years ago faster than the speed of light.

Phones, TVs, dogs, guns, whatever. The issue is the people using them. The problem is never our inventions, the problem is us. Humans allow their children to watch tv all night, play video games too much, and model the example of always having a phone in hand. People shoot people. People don't train their pets.
We are the stewards of our own society gents, we have to take responsibility for what it has become. The devices may enable our bad behavior, but ultimately, it falls on us.

If we can identify it, we can change it.

I can never tell if you're being serious, and while I'm fairly sure you aren't, even if I assume that you were, all that theory proves is that we can identify the patterns in our own behavior as a society. If we can identify it, we can change it. Theoretically, a planet sized computer could both completely analyze and accurately predict the total neural effects of a new medium on one human brain and recommend changes to that medium before it is introduced to many brains as to be a guaranteed benefit to society with limited or no ill effects. Practically, we become what we behold and as we shape our tools they forever reshape us.

I wonder if McLuhan had a cell phone he was dead by 1980. The world has moved a fair ways forward since that time.

+1 ... I'd rather believe in personal accountability and guiding my own fate. Maybe some people can't get beyond what they have "beholden" (or whatever) but that does not apply to all of us. Jason is on the right path!

I read this and couldn't stop laughing. Is there something wrong with me?
"meta-meme Meta-Meme is all, Choking on a clown, Anne Frank, Cancer, Corn-On-The-Cob, Poster, Japan, Apples, and Chef. A meta-meme is everything you could ever want. it will cure your mothers testicular cancer, and it will cure your dads EbolAids. I am so alone and want to die. Why didn't you do your homework? Dude, It's a meta-meme
That doesn't make sense. Its a meta-meme"
