well, headed out in a bit to go to a national qualifier karate tournament. Son is competing, he is a first degree black belt. He will compete in weapons (sai) and open hand kata this morning, but kumite (sparring) won't be until after everyone else has competed -- starting about 4pm most likely. Ugh. They used to wait and do everything together, but most of the black belts are referees and judges and are pretty tired by the end of the day. Last tournament was in November, it was just an open tournament, and Son was put up against the "Star." Ever since becoming a black belt he has been very timid with his fighting. He is the only first degree, everybody else is 3rd, and 4th degrees, so he's a little intimidated. Last tournament, though, he did very well. None of his points were counted (there is a little favoritism going on) but it took almost 2 minutes for the guy to finally get enough points on Son to win, and usually their fights were over within 30 seconds, so we were very proud. On my youtube page I have video of Son doing kata -- both weapons and open hand, and a couple of fights. The video below is the fight from last tournament and that video is on our dojo youtube page where you can find Son's videos of his black belt test. (Oh, so you know, Son is the littler guy wearing the red belt and red gloves, lol)

thanks, everyone! we got there, got set up and he got sick -- fever, vertigo -- so couldn't compete. We stayed so he could watch the Iaido (sword) competition and then headed home. Very disappointing, but there is another qualifier in Ohio next month.

yes, Son did a lot better than the "points" would indicate during the fight. Thanks, Stan!
