This is the first paneled pipe I've tried and I think it's coming a long well besides the bumps in the road I've hit so far. It started as a Dublin but, I failed to leave myself enough room to tapper the bowl properly. Oh yeah, I could have still done it but, I like to leave more then enough chamber thickness then required to CMA.
I hadn't intended to blast it after seeing the one or two panels that have birds eye but, one panel has pits and the rest besides the two with birds eye are just not a whole lot to look at. So I think I will do a partial blast, just doing the shank and the heel of the bowl using the the up swept lines of the panels to divide where the blast starts and ends. Going to be a fun masking job but, I've done it before in the past. Whatcha think?

Maybe alternate the blasts to have some contrast. Not that I know anything about blasting. 😀

It’s so Manly, give it a ligh blast front and back, then heavy on the sides, giving you a good grip. That’s my 2 cents ! Sorry my old eyes though it was a 4 sided panel, I still would give it contrast blasts,

I like a smooth paneled pipe, and I love birdseye grain. If you can do a nice partial blast, go for it. Sometimes a pipe is worth having a couple of fills.

Just looked at some blasted panel pipes. They looked very nice. I think blast will look great on it.

Save the eye and blast the holes and knots. That^^^is what I was saying in my usual obtuse way.

I know most everyone else wants a full blast but, I am leaning towards a partial. Reckon we'll see how it turns out, hows Tan and black sound (Tan- smooth Black-Blast)?
Too late, already did it!

Save the eye and blast the holes and knots. Wish there was a way to do that and have it look right but, two panels I found right next to each other have small pits all the rest are fine. So it would look awkward doing it that way so I just left the panels smooth and blasted the rest (shank, heel and top of bowl). If it ends up looking poorly I can always reblast and Blast the whole thing and use one color. It basically done except finish right now and I'm just contemplating whether I like it or not.

We'll take a vote on it, if you like...course you are gonna do it the way you want anyway as it is your $$ invested in it.

I have pipes from pipemakers that partially blasted pipes are standard fare. The Randy Wiley is fantastic.

Although I do love a good blast, the birdseye on this pipe has real promise.
I for one hope you stain it and finish it smooth. Hopefully bringing out that beautiful grain.
