I have a friend who visits me often..He's a friend but he really frustrates me at times..He lumps people into groups and thinks everyone in that group is the same..Example ..This morning as every morning I had a few of my neighbors in my house for coffee..Some one mentioned that one of our neighbors..A widow lady has just got a smart phone that her kids got her..My friend spoke up and said she won't learn to use it she's old..I said..Hey I'm old and I use a smart phone...This is no big deal except..I have a big problem with folks who think that because I'm old I'm some how less bright than I should be.

Larry, consider yourself fortunate to be able to learn new stuff and assimilate it into your life. I'm old and could give a crap about new stuff (with the exception of one of Ron's pipes)...when we used to travel (before Miami) I relied on the wife's Google maps to get us where we needed to go in addition to actual maps that I can hold in my hand and write on if need be. So I can understand your desire to "keep up with the times"...I prefer to be left alone in my own world of simplicity.

Most people are quite surprised when they find out about some of my religious and political views.
I'm supposed to be like, a Tibetan Buddhist, Hindu, or eastern spiritualist or something. Oh, and a card carrying democrat.
And I'm supposed to eat certain foods. And behave a certain way all the time.
No. I just like to live free, man.
When people get locked into that kind of thinking, especially as they get older, they're just stuck, man. Just appreciate the other qualities your friend has. There's no point in trying to change him now. He's likely a codger, like us. I've known many people like your friend in my life and I just avoid topics and change subjects when they come up. There's not much else you can do.

It does peeve me off a little cause my daughter of 41 thinks I'm an idiot also but, ya have to look at it this way, there the idiots for thinking you are.
And just smile at'em and I'm sure they'll think twice next time...............maybe.

Sage advice.
I have pretty strong political views, but as I get older, I have realized that a diplomatic approach to the current political climate is the best way to go... and I would be robbed of great times with brothers of the briar if I thought that I needed to “take the hill”.
It is best to guide the conversations to a neutral zone.

Of course not all of us can look like Harvey Keitel.

A funny story...
I used to deliver to a guy that opened a barbecue joint in Castroville Ca. “Central Texan Barbecue” he told me that he studied under an old black man that was the barbecuer for Austin city Limits... and pulled up stakes to move west.
His business took off like a rocket, and the demand always exceeded the output.
One time, a customer told Don that he looked like someone famous.... I piped up: “He looks like Gabby Hayes”... Everyone said “you nailed it”... Don looked at me As everyone laughed...and said, “I am going to kick your arse!”
I went next door bought a bottle of Wild Turkey and my sins were absolved.
I miss the old buzzzard.

Funny, my mum (who's 83) thought that I was doing that exact same thing when I asked her to stay indoors and self-isolate. Her reply was, 'do you think I'm doting? I can go outside because I've got all my faculties. She thought I was lumping everyone over 70 into the category of 'losing their mind' when I was simply asking her to stay inside. In your situation, Larry - that person would frustrate me too. I hate it when people make assumptions about other people. I suppose Susan Boyle helped to quash that perception...

She was so great that night. I re-watch it a couple of times a year. Always gives me chills.
