I was used to it and didn't mind much, but one day coming from Orlando someone was smoking a cigar and it was killing me. Even though I smoke a pipe, my lungs want to stop working in the presence of cigarette smoke. I believe that people should be able to smoke, even in bars and separate sections in restaurants, but I am against smoking on planes, in elevators, in vans or other places where they are crammed together with humans.

Some folks who smoke get really stressed when they have to get on a plane..I wonder if they could smoke if it would help them relax a bit.

Didn't mind the cigarette smoke as much as an overbearing cigar in a confined space...it was a little too much.

Maybe the answer is to have smoking and non smoking flights? But then they'd have to segregate the fleet of aircraft so that could get costly fast. Oh, and the government would NEVER permit it...

I hear you, and agree.. my original post was tongue in cheek. I rode continental trailways several times with my grandma on trips... I always had a sore throat and felt like hell. My parents chain smoked in the car, and it never affected me that way... better air exchange I reckon. It would be pretty cool to have my own Gulfstream and smoke my pipe... off to start a GoFundMe.

You can get a low time Cessna 150 or with decent avionics for less than $25,000. Add about $12,000 for the private pilot's license and you're good to go. If you need to sell it, you probably won't even lose money.

I prefer my pickup truck to flying. Now that I have plenty of time to get to places. But then I don't smoke while I drive either.

I would like to give you a 1/2 like....I crack my window & smoke goes out. You can get in my vehicle & no smoke smell. Have been taking road trips, up till now, no planes & trains.

I used to smoke while parked at lunch with the window open, but I just don't like to drive and smoke. It doesn't work for me.

I like that picture in the article. That guy looks really happy. Oh well. They also had bars on airplanes, especially wide bodies, in the 70's and 80's. With lounges for seating. That's gone too.

When there was smoking on airplanes, they filtered air, taking old out & new in. Since they stopped it, recirculating cabin air, many including me, got colds, etc. every time we flew.

I don't care what ya smoke, how you smoke it, windows up, windows down, your head sticking out the window like a basset hound, it always smells like a filthy ashtray and ya can't get rid of it.......without spending stupid money to do it. I don't smoke in my house either. The only place I smoke is outside or in the shop and I don't like doing it but, its nonproductive to step outside every dang time I want to smoke. Thankfully I can air the shop out pretty good and lets face it, with the other smells going on in there it helps to disguise it a bit but, I sure wouldn't want to sleep in there with that stank.

I had to loan my CRX to a buddy for several weeks one time, and he chain-smoked cigarettes the whole time with the windows rolled up. Took about six months before it stopped smelling (or I became used to it). Thanks, John.

Despite the 2000+ hours I flew in my 65 Bonanza, I never did smoke a pipe in it... But there were definitely a few (dozen) cigars....

Smoking in ariplanes?
In 1967, a bud and I flew from Washington D.C. to San Francisco on a United Airlines flight, Boeing 707, as I recall. Back in the cheap seats, the plane was maybe 1/4 full. My buddy, Howie, and I had prepared cigarettes. Howie took Egyptian made Rameses cigarettes, sliced them open with a razor blade, mixed in crumbled hashish, and resealed the cigarette with a piece of Zig Zag. Hashish was more plentiful than leafy Pot in D.C. back then. The powerful odor of Turkish tobacco did a fine job of masking the Hashish smell. So, we flew across the country more than Eight Miles High. Not one glance from a Stewardess nor a passenger. No questions asked. That seems hard to imagine these days but that was the way back then.

That is a great airplane. A friend in Taos has one. Every now then he buzzes me at home when flying north. That Continental always sounds good to me.
