By inference, this writer thinks of them as bloodthirsty renegades that are counting coup on the public, I am surprised that he didn’t call them dirty savages. They are a sovereign nation, but the village idiot that wrote the article believes that they are somehow not law abiding by contrast.
The level of stupidity in modern “journalism” astounds me... I could mark it up as ignorance, but where is the seasoned editor to correct mistakes?
It isn’t about correcting mistakes, it is about agenda.

As a quarter native American, I am only a little offended. As a decendent of the French Canadians that raided, burned and slaughtered in the town of Albany, I feel less bad. 🤠

It's the Buffalo News. It's not like anyone reads it. What, do you have a computer search bot that scans the internet for anti tobacco stories? Or did you pick up a copy of the Buffalo News in Sedona?

I am just the legal counsel for the Hekawi tribe. We need to keep tabs on this kind of stuff.

To be fair, that's an editorial, an opinion piece. No one's trying to pass it off as journalism.
It'a a good idea though; while I have my preferred brick and mortar that's not on tribal land, there are many of those options around here...

Good point. It certainly isn't journalism, more like a rag.

Rez stores 20mins from me. I go only for gas (at least .20 per gallon less than cheapest place, within sight of our house). Might pickup a few sundries while there.
I don't smoke ciggies, but several Native brands in the $18-20 per carton range. The stores are independent owned but it's more a co-operative among the 6-7 stores. Nobody allowed to charge more than 10% more than any other. Just a convenience for those who actually live on "the Nation"....(Towanda/Seneca)

I just read the piece and from what I gather the writer is whining about native shops that are/ will be taking business away from non native shops which he is a member of a co-op. The writer seems to to me to be complaining that consumers are flocking to Native shops and not paying huge NY taxes instead of going to HIS shop and paying taxes on the product. The writer from my perspective is using the sovereignty of the Native American Nations from NY and their tax free status as being unfair to his business and wants the public to do their "civic duty" and buy from his store. JMHO
