Al was a great player and a real gentleman. He sure gave my Yankees a tough time.

I am a native Michigander and a lifelong Tigers fan. A bit of my childhood died yesterday. I sure feel old today.

I was born in Tiger Town, Al Kaline was my boyhood sports hero. As a little tyke, I'd smack a ball around the yard, pretending to be him. I still have a great in-action framed pic of him up in my garage here in SC. Great hitter, amazing arm from right field...and a real gent. Thanks for posting about him.

When I first saw the name I thought this was a joke.
Still, sorry to hear of anyone's passing.

Al was one of my boyhood favorites as well. I grew up in Toledo and fans were divided between the Tigers and the Indians. I rooted for the Indians until...the great tragedy. Rocky Colavito was traded to the Tigers. The radio station I listened to for the Indians games switched to the Tigers. I had immediately followed Rocky to Detroit and had quickly learned the value of Al Kaline. He was an outstanding all around player who was impossible not to like. By the time Rocky faded from the scene I was hooked on Kaline.

Tiger man myself. I spent the first 14 years of my life just South of Detroit.
It's a sad loss for all the fans.

I remember very clearly when alkaline batteries were first introduced. I was just a kid and asked "why would they put Al Kaline's name on these batteries?" I was very serious...and I thought it was real goofy.
