Yes. COVID-19. He was a two time cancer survivor.
I'm sure he's enjoying that cocktail

He developed Stage 4 cancer in 1997 and then sometime around 2003, he had a portion of one of his lungs removed because it was cancerous. Most people with stage 4 cancer die within a year, but he lived for another 23 years. Still, if it wasn't for the current Covid-19 pandemic, they would be saying he died from smoking.

I'm not downplaying Covid-19. I just not buying into the everyone is dying from Covid-19 either. Truth is John Prine had Stage 4 Cancer. He was dying from cancer before Covid-19 and if Covid-19 hadn't become a pandemic, he would have died from cancer. In the media here in Louisiana they are reporting a lot of deaths as Covid-19 and there has been pushback from the families of some victims. Two weeks ago, a 17-year old boy's death was reported as a Covid-19 death and his father did an interview and said his son had other health issues and they were told last year that he would die within a year. Just the other day, a one-day old baby died and the media said it was Covid-19 related because the mother had been tested for Covid. The baby was also born three months premature. No autopsy was done on either to confirm the had the virus. Covid-19 is very serious and it is killing a lot of people with underlying health issues like high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, etc. But, I'm sorry to offend you, it is not killing everyone who has died in the past two months. So, no, I'm not downplaying the virus. The wife and I are self-isolating and only going out when absolutely necessary. We are not even allowing our children or grandchildren to come over.

I didn't see it as a "Downplay", just a statement of fact. If you get your news from other than the big 3 MSM networks, you'll most certainly have read that many deaths have been wrongly attributed to covid 19. Not being a conspiracy theorist, just a realist. I'm not advocating that we ignore social distancing or that everyone go around licking doorknobs. But I for one am tired of the shrill voiced alarmists that are not only over sensationalizing this sad time in our lives, but looking to blame the current administration for the woes of their city's / state's lack of preparation. Just my $0.02

That's why I said,"probably." He was a great musician and he's gone. That's all.

Just my $0.02 Case in point^^^ BTW, that is not a statement of fact because as I said, if he hadn't contracted the virus he would not be dead. Now, "smoking" may have killed him at a later date, but the virus killed him last night. That is a fact.

I will miss him, but I have his music. This thread is about to head off the rails. Check your attitude at the door.

Good grief.
If I was sick with stage four cancer and had a month to live, but I walked in front of a car and got run over and killed, you wouldn't say that I died of cancer. You would say that I got hit by a car and killed. The cause of death was the accident. Period.
It is the same with the virus. To say anything other is only trying to downplay the seriousness of the disease. Motives for doing that are questionable at best.

Nipping this one in the bud.
It's sad that the man died, regardless of how he went.
