I'm sure this is already here somewhere - and/or there is a YouTube video on it. However I wanted y'alls professional opinions on removing cake from the rim of the pipe without damaging the finish? I use a zippo most of the time so my pipes are getting a black tar and despite running a pipe cleaner over it every time ... is growing larger.

Try spit on a rag, then rubbing alcohol. And get a pipe lighter!

I have a pipe lighter but it's kind of frustrating. I cant rely on it to be my only source of fire anywhere I go. I must always bring a back-up and if that's the case why not just use the back-up right? If I had a good one that would be different but half the time this one doesn't light or needs fuel or what have ya'. I know what to expect out of the zippo always - plus it has my anniversary engraved on it so I dont forget and get in trouble with the wife.

A Thumderbird insert for a Zippo is cheap and a Zippo can be engraved.

I carry a zippo every single day. Only some of my pipes ever get lit with it.
Matches are my preference.
A little bit of spit and a cloth will normally clean it right up.

Spit and a paper towel.

Spit and a rub works for me.
How can you tell the difference between cake or that you've burned the rim?

Well it doesn't seem burnt to me because - despite using the zippo I am pretty good about keeping the flame off the pipe. To the touch - the cake is sticky and gummy not burnt or crisp feeling

Another method you can try. Take a pipe cleaner fold it in half dip the folded end in to your cup of coffee. Then rub the rim with slight pressure until area is cleaned. Note: it might be best to pour a small amount of coffee into another container, the above make take a couple swabbings.
And another one, moisten your thumb with silva then rub the rim with thumb. Repeat as needed.
