The weather has turned cold again; but the couple of weeks before that, we had decent enough weather to sit and have a few bowls in between filming and editing etc.
I found myself packing my pipe in a different way than normal, and it seems to work for me.
I dribble a very small amount of tobacco into the pipe at a time, and I gently make sure it's nicely 'together' at the bottom of the pipe. I have been doing this with the end of a pencil for some reason.
Now, when I gently push the tobacco down, I don't mean squashed down - I just make sure there are no air gaps. I don't use much pressure at all. I repeat this until the tobacco has filled the pipe. There's no change in pressure etc. It's just a matter of making sure the tobacco is all together with no air pockets.
This way has me finishing the pipe with very few relights.
I don't know why I never tried this before.
P.S. I'm really loving the SWRA

Been doing that for years now. Really cuts down on relights. The draw on my pipes is nearly the same empty as it is full.

I mostly just codger scoop and I smoke it to ash. It's hard to remember when I worried about packing the pipe.

I just do the knocking to settle everything and to see how much volume I have to work with.👍

They often think it's harder than it is. That's what I figured out. It was too hard to remember all the supposed steps. Now I just stuff it and puff it. As long as I can draw it, I'm ok.

^^^^this. Figure out your own way, get it wrong a few times, and you're on the path to doing it right every time.

I smoke flakes now because it is so windy here. So I do the ole "fold and twist" method.

Sometimes I load my pipe with only tamping down the first pinch. Then I use my thumb to press down the rest. I don’t tamp down again until after the first light. This seems to work out fine. I don’t do it with every bowl. It depends on how deep the bowl is.
