The wheel bearings and probably one brake rotor and caliper need to be replaced. How bad was it? Clouds of smoke from burning differential oil and brake fluid as the failed wheel bearings created monumental heat
I see there are a gazillion parts involved in this axle rebuild- seals, rings, bearings, seal, rings, round things that are driven into place with drift punches.
Never having done this before, is this an expensive and difficult job? At this time, not doing tie-rod/king pins/ball joints. Just the axle (both sides) and brake on side..

Front or rear axel? It's pretty involved on the heavy duty trucks and best handled by a pro. The rear axel is a little cheaper, but nothing is cheap anymore and if it's had that much heat it will probably take more than the minimum number of parts.

Happened to me once, in the 70's. Rear drivers side wheel came off at 65 MPH in the mountains of Asheville area. Was able to keep it pointing straight in the grassy meridian, rooster tail of red clay behind us near Maggie Valley. Was blessed, small garage that towed it had a datsun 510 in for other repairs and he pirated parts off it & We were on our way the next day. Glad you caught yours early. Didn't mean to take away from your post, but I never forgot that one. I wouldnt attempt the repair myself with my mechanical skills. Something about wheels staying on is dear to me. Good luck and stay safe.

Sorry, I missed the title I guess. Yeah, find a pro and be prepared to pay thru the nose 👃.

Ok I just realized your description answered my question on 4wd or rear only..
Unless you are really confident in your ability to figure things out, I'd take it to a shop. I did the front bearing on a small FWD car and it required a press kit I had to buy. Bearings are pressed in. The only time I've had to do it on a 4wd I paid the man who knew what he was doing (Sort of, but that is another story)

After examining all of the parts on line, this is way over my ability and I do not trust my neighbor. I just have to figure the finances.

It is a good thing that you are loaded, you old miser!
Can I borrow the Gulfstream? I heard the Scotch distilleries in Scotland will be reopening soon, I would like to make the trip.

I'm no help here at all, but I hope you can get it sorted quickly, easily and cheaply.

Decided to take the old Landcruiser into town to have a "professional;" look it over and calculate an estimate. Quaking in my boots as I face those costs.

If it were not for my being so color blind, I might eventually even qualify to fly this thing if I could ever own one.
