i am looking at getting a falcon pipe. so far i have only had petersons. what are your opinions on falcon pipes? how many bowls do you get from 1 dry ring? what are the advantages to a meeschaum lined bowl? any help would be appreciated thanks

Hi, I've got a Falcon with two bowls although none are meerschaum. I don't get a great advantage out of the replaceable bowl given that I tend to smoke the same pipe until it needs a thorough clean. My take on a Falcon is that it smokes well enough (cool and lets you sip) but you need to take care to screw/unscrew it properly. The company suggests switching out the dry ring more often than I bother to (maybe every 10-15 bowls). My 2-cents anyway.

What Zambini said. I had several bowls for it and one was meerschaum. Taste wise, couldn't tell them apart.

Falcons are good pipes, but for the money they don't beat a basket briar. If you want a great smoking metal pipe you have to pony up for a Kirsten. Sometimes you can find a Grabow Viking for cheap. It's a similar design to the Falcon, but better in my opinion.

IMO, Falcons (et.al metal pipes) are good for working while smoking but that's about it. I knew an old man that smoked Falcon pipe all day long and he loved them but he had a calluse (so he claimed) on his.. ahem.. posterior where he stuck the hot pipe in his back pocket. But he never broke a pipe while he was working.

I have 3 Falcons and I don't ever use the dry rings. Just my personal taste. I will say though, if you do use them, it's cheaper to cut up a bunch of pipe cleaners and use them as homemade rings as it's much much cheaper in the long run.

I also have a falcon, and have never had a dry ring; cut up pipe cleaners work fine...If you run across a Grabow Viking, grab it up. I have a viking and I like it much better than the falcon .The Viking is very light and the airflow is more open than the falcon.
Falcons are still well worth owning, and I'm not saying the Viking is better...just that I like mine better.

We had a member (St.Valentine) from Germany who was pour resident Falcon expert. You may want to search some of his postings, if they're still here somewhere. I have a Falcon Shillelagh. Neat little pips with several bowls but rarely smoked.

I was gifted a falcon, and after my first smoke the bowl became stuck. I've yet been able to take it apart to clean it. I must revisit that.

I was gifted a falcon type pipe from I believe .. Ron. Haven't ever been able to screw the bowl down properly but still smokes just as well. Maybe it's because I dont have the said ring in it?

I like my falcon. It means a lot to me because an ex or sometimes ex member here gave me the bowl that I use. I don't think I would sit down with it after a long day but for something on the go they are great.

We watched "I Found My Love Again" last night and I have to say that I believe that Henry Fonda was a real pipe smoker. He spoke so naturally with the pipe in his mouth.

I won an eBay auction for a Falcon, last night. It only took me a month! Yes, it would have been faster if I wasn't so cheap.

Should make any tars and buildup a little brittle and should allow the wood to separate form the metal a tad. I inherited a few of my grandads Kirstens that hadn't been cleaned in about 20 years and had sat in my uncles garage that whole time. That helped a lot after I soaked them in everclear for a week. Just a thought.

I like my Falcons because I can unscrew the bowl and run the metal stem under hot water and have all the goo and smell out of it completely. The bowl is easy to clean as well because you can pass a paper towel through the bowl and twist it clean.
Never any worry about nasties being trapped somewhere you can't get to.

I never thought of rinsing the stem under hot water. I think I might try that (once I get the bowl off).

As long as you rinse it very good, I would even clean it with hot water, dish soap & pipe cleaners or stem brush to get whatever crud is in there out. It metal. kerley0319.. the times I had that issue threads on stem or bowl were dirty. & Sometimes I had to sit & stare at it, screwing it on back & forth till it did it right.

I have two Falcons and a Grabow Viking. Not my favorite pipes, but all three have seen a lot of hard use and are still very much in service. If I had to design an outdoor pipe that can stand up to the rigors with minimal attention the Viking and the Falcon would win hands down. I love cobs too, but you can't slosh the stem and shank around in the creek for a quick clean. They give a very decent smoke too. No complaints for what they are. A working man/outdoorsman pipe.

I've come to believe that cavalier style pipes are the only ones that really make any sense. Falcon probably isn't the best, but I doubt there's anything out there that's significantly better except in the looks department. As far as smoking, I imagine they're about as good as anything else based on that design.
My one major complaint with Falcon is that they don't offer a true Dublin style bowl. That's another one of my beliefs is that a tapered bowl just makes sense. But they have one that's kind of a Dublin shape, it's just that the inside of the bowl isn't as aggressively tapered as I would like.
I prefer meerschaum to briar. I feel like I get a cooler dryer smoke out of it from the beginning. Life is too short to suffer through breaking in briar bowls in my opinion.

Don Warren will make any shape that you desire, in any size you desire, in briar, morta or olive. Go to Ozgur for Meershaum. Unless you buy an estate pipe, you will miss the joy of smoking a Peterson that's had thousands of bowls smoked in it. A well broken in Pete is transcendent.
