Is anyone familiar with the Thunderbird Butane Insert? I have one, been using it for 2-3 months. I refilled it today and all it does is spark, it doesn't ignite. I always bleed it before refilling, I'm using the recommended brand of butane, so I'm a bit confused about why it won't light.

Do a quick test: try lighting it with another lighter or match. Carefully check to make sure the jets are clean. An uneven flame could indicate that they are dirty. I find piezo lighters to be very sensitive at times. It could also be that the sparking element may be slightly bent. Lighters are the bane of tobacconists. They like selling them but hate dealing with quality issues.

OK, if you're brave you could try playing with the wire element. Maybe pushing it down a bit but be very gently. The spark is obviously not igniting the gas. I've had this problem with Xikar lighters and finally gave up on them. I now use an Old Boy for my pipes and a $10 refillable gas lighter for my cigars. When it gives up the ghost I'll just spend another $10.

Correct. Check it to make sure it is straight over the gas jets.

Whoooa ... wait a second before ya go and start doing some shade tree lighter mechanicing on the wire thingymajiggy. It lit before you filled it so why would you need to start bending it now to make it light?
The biggest problem with ALL butane refillable lighters after you refill them is they don't like to light and/or the flame is all whackydonkle and aint the same as it was before ya filled it. There is a reason for this but I aint going to get into the atmospheric cognitional theories of hemispherical biochemistry effects of the rotation of the moon vs the gravitational pull of the 3rd moon of the Klingoff 2nd homeworld.
Before you try anything else turn the gas adjustment almost all the way down and see if it will light. Chances are it will and the flame will be very small. Now adjust the flame up to how you want it and I bet it will light like it did before. With the new fill in it and with **see above paragraph** the gas is probably coming out to intensely to light. Give it a try and I bet it probably will work.

well, actually the sporatic lighting started before I needed to refill it, but it was still lighting at about every 3-4 flicks of the wheel. I tried what you suggested, I turned it all the way down and nothing, then I adjusted it little by little all the way up and still nothing at any point. However, it will light if I bring a flame close to it. Doesn't make any sense to me. The lighter is under warranty, i just want to make sure the problem is with the lighter and I didn't just mess something up.

mine two. must have been more politically correct or a safety issue to add the new #1....

Ya know ... as I sit here and think for a minute you said your lighter is insert type right? Is it a torch flame or a soft flame lighter? If it is a soft flame I dont think its going to have the wire thingamjiggy because I think the soft flame inserts have a wheel like a zippo and they are sparked by a flint. vectorkgm.com/official/th-insert-p-lighter/

yes, it is a soft flame insert. i was also just thinking, should the lever that "fits" inside the zippo lid be in the "closed" position as i fill it? it has always been in the open position because that is the position it's in when i pull it out of the case to fill it.

Maggie, the position of the lighter cover does not matter. Try this. Empty the lighter until you don't hear any air escaping. Put the insert in the freezer for 5 minutes. At the same time put the can of butane in hot water. Fill a glass or pot with hot water and put the butane in for a few minutes. Then take the insert out of the freezer and fill as you normally do. this will fill your lighter with minimal air.

The position of that little lever DOES matter. That is what basically turns the gas on and off. That little tab dohicky should be in the upright position, just like if it was in the case with the lid closed as you fill it and should be in the down position like when the lid is open when lighting it.
Just as a really crazy question you do get sparkys when you flick on the wheel?

yes, it seems to spark fine, but eventually i will need to replace the flint, right?

Also something to think about is this is also a perfect situation where both google and youtube could also really answer allot of your questions and problems. Especially youtube and being able to watch videos.

i have a zippo pipe lighter and it works great, but it dries out quickly (i don't get to smoke every day, but for a daily smoker that might not be much of an issue) and you have that fuel smell that the butane doesn't.

i never thought of that. i am not on youtube much, even though you can find great information there, it has a lot of crappy advice too, so an inexperienced person (such as myself) needs to be cautious. i will go see what i can find.
