Looking for general opinions on the shape. There is a video on YouTube that explains the shape pretty well but was looking for more tangible information. Do you all love them, hate them, or anything really. Thank you in advance.

I looked and handled several but I really think it's much ado about nothing. I don't find them attractive to begin with so I opinion is biased. My question to those who have would be how hard are they to clean?

I am quite fascinated by them! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so there may be mixed opinions about aesthetics but they deliver a dryer smoke for sure. Cleaning is even easier than with a normal pipe: You just twist a paper towel in the oversized stem and use a pipe cleaner as usual. I love mine! This one was made by German pipemaker Hartmut Heckmann:

Frank, I like that pipe. So many reverse calabashes look like an anaconda that swallowed capybara.

Haha John, You´re right! There might be more elegant pipes but the RC´s are stellar smokers in my opinion.

I have a Radice and it's in my regular rotation. I think it's a great smoker and does produce a much dryer smoke but, I don't see it as an easy cleaner. The chamber really gets filthy after 4 bowls of Escudo.

Thank you gents for the insightful opinions and awesome pics. Those pipes look fantastic. I think for cleaning I will twist a paper towel in right after the pipe cools between bowls. I've included the one I ordered, it's short and stubby like me. Briarworks Rhodesian for short, the real name is stupid long. Ordered from smokingpipes.com during the sale for IPSD. Attachments:

Wow, I had no idea MM made a reverse calabash. I've seen a briar cigar shape from cob that was a reverse, but not like you have. The second has amazing flame and probably a great pocket pipe with tons of flavor. Thank you for sharing those, Frank.

Hi, I like traditional gourd calabashes (&shell pipes 😎), bye. I've heard nothing but good things about those. Eyeballing one from Briarworks, but it's briar instead of the traditional gourd and meerschaum so haven't pulled the trigger yet.

There is actually some science behind an RC, or gourd calabash for that matter. The secondary chamber has to be big enough for there to actually be an effect on the smoke. Read THIS post on Anthony Harris' website. He has taken the time to do the math. Most RCs that are made don't have anywhere near the secondary chamber to have any type of effect on the smoke at all. I'm not knocking them at all, just pointing to the science of the shape. I have made quite a few RCs and always strive to make the secondary chamber as large as I can. I actually have one of Anthony's RCs and can say unequivocally that it is the best smoking pipe I own. Most of us will agree that McCranie's 1983 Red Ribbon is a magical smoke in just about every pipe you put it in. In Anthony's RC is quite transcendent. If you want to find out for yourself, just find me at the Chicago Show and I'll load a bowl.

Ladybriarpipes, That was a fascinating read and I bookmarked the page to make a purchase in the future as well. Not sure my Briarworks will make the cut after all. Thank you highly for the information and offer. I can not promise I'll make the show, but it would be an experience for sure! I have little ones all around me Take care, Justin

I'm not much of a follower of fashion or fads. (I mean, I was still using Windows XP when everyone was switching to Windows 10 ). Anyhow, my interest in RC's was piqued by this thread and I acquired two of these a while ago. Forgot to post them due to codgerdom . Here is the Goussard: goussardpipes.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=479&Itemid=269 I guess the specific shape (Danish influenced like Eltang's Tubos) may not be to everyone's taste, but I love it, and in the words of Charl: " I like RC's to show that they are exactly that and not incorporated into a normal design." Having broken it in over a two week period, I can state that it does deliver a cooler smoke and is an excellent smoker of straight Va's. FVF in this pipe is a marvel. (Ok, Ok, FVF in any pipe is a marvel ) I also acquired this little artistically sculpted Pietenpauw RC from Jean du Toit: pietenpauw.co.za/index.php/formerly-sold/freehand/sonvanger-detailA beautiful pipe and an excellent smoker!

No, in fact one of our forum members sold it to me. They were long gone when I learned about them. Right now I am on the list at Missouri Meerschaum should they ever make RC´s.
