Today after church, I accompanied the wife to do some shopping and then lunch, as we ended lunch today, she said "Why don't we go to an antique shop and see what they have in the way of pipes" ..I was reluctant to go, as my go-to store recently only had burned up, chewed up, pipes.... Well, I am glad that I listened to her... I found a 1 pound boxed, factory sealed plug of tobacco... It was sealed in plastic...obviously not original....shaking it, it felt like a solid brick, no loose shake...here is an advertisment, I couldn't figure out how to screenshot a google library document. BY clicking on the magnifying glass on the upper left corner of the webpage, you can make it readable for old eyes.books.google.com/books?id=lV8wAQAAMAAJ&pg=RA5-PA28&lpg=RA5-PA28&dq=old+english+curve+cut+pipe+tobacco+tin&source=bl&ots=sYDIl3Ac1E&sig=8xavvMiSXlrRLBp8uJRnkv1x0qM&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj7n6-Kn53SAhUrqFQKHXjVAn84ChDoAQgpMAM#v=onepage&q=old%20english%20curve%20cut%20pipe%20tobacco%20tin&f=falseIf you noticed at the bottom of the article it says that "The curved tin fit's perfectly into the pocket" So I am guessing that the box possibly contains individual curved tins of tobacco...the only way I can find out is by breaking the seal....I found this image online of the tin...The advertisment lists it as a 10 cent tin at 1913 prices, but it also says they have larger sizes.. Here she is... With the lid off: I didn't buy these...the cigar clippings sounded pretty dry when I shook them...the cigarettes look vintage, Brian Levine recently commented on how great some old Chesterfields tasted aat the last Chicago pipe show, and he isn't a cigarette smoker...notice the pack on the upper right are Winston select...I didn't get the price on the cigarettes, I can go back and look if anyone is interested. I think they wanted $30.00 for the cigar clippings, priced that same as my one pound plug.

Picked this up also for $10.00 but it is missing the "genuine Amber" stem as printed inside the lid..Austrian made, the case is in great shape, unsmoked....Mike Myers at Walker Briar works does magic on amber looking acrylic stems. I am convinced that the "crack" around the circumference under the bowl is by design...it is a pefect line...two part body/ bowl?

Thanks Mike, I have always wanted to get a cheroot holder, but the prices are always a bit higher than I wanted to spend for something rearely used.
If the Seal is busted in my posession on this big bad case O' plug, it will have to happen at a pipe club meeting with my fellow troublemakers...or in Vegas, baby.

Thanks guys...After looking closely at the tax stamp, I see that it is marked September, 1944, and faintly stamped, "The A T Co. Factory 01 Dist. of Va. Old English was made by the American Tobacco company, and on the bottom of the box it says the same thing in factory print..Factory No 1... ...the same year as D-Day on Normandy, and battle of the bulge in December of that year...my uncle "Bud" Casimero Trujillo fought in both of them campaigns.

I have one of the larger Old English tins. I always wondered how good the tobacco was.

I do have a clay pipe, but other than the double chin, red jacket, and white hair, I look just like that guy! From inside the lid: Hey, it comes with a money back gaurantee! We are going to break the seal at the pipe club meeting on March 11th, I expect it will be pretty dry so I read up a bunch on rehydrating. I figure that the best method is: pipesmagazine.com/python/pipe-tobacco/pipe-tobacco-rehydration/Stirring it would probably be disastrous if it is as dry as I expect... I am pretty sure that it is a solid brick and not individual curved tins.I told the wife that it might be like indiana Jones finding the ark of the covenant... Or Geraldo River opening up Al Capone's vault! I suspect that it will be somewhere in between...maybe I should wear the closest hat I have to an Indiana Jones hat, just for good luck! I sure ain't going as Geraldo!

Well...next Saturday is our pipe club meeting, so I decided to cut the stamp and see if I can slowly rehydrate it in a weeks time.... I have low expectations from a non sealed box of tobacco from over 70 years old so here is waht I see.... Greenish dust....Mold or just the natural secretion of tobacco matter? When I layed out the stacks of flake, this is how the exposed flakes looked...I put a rack underneath so as to possibly help with the hydration. I figured that the best method was to slowly hydrate with a wrung out towel of distilled water over a bowl, rubber banded, and saran wrap over the top. The last of the bottom.... Went into the jar, with a hydration stone, in the past really dry tobacco hydrates in a couple days..we will see.

Very cool. A most interesting experiment in progress. You might open up some sort of extra-dimensional portal when you smoke that.

I am a realist.....at some point tobacco aging has diminishing returns, and at some point after that (especially unsealed) is going to have a major fade effect....probably somewhat sacrilegious to cut the tax stamp on such an old sealed collectible item...but what the hell.

What good is having a something to smoke if you dont smoke it? I agree.... I was thinking about the collectability of it.... I searched high and low on the internet to see if anyone had smoked it and the only instance I saw of the leaf, is someone wants $50.00 for a little pocket tin... and the tins aren't vacuum sealed either.
