So I am within 2-4 weeks of getting my external separated from the house workshop/Mancave built. Where I will be able to smoke and work on pipes all at the same time, it's an exiting dream of mine. So the plan is to eventually have all the tools that I don't have now in it. Everything I need to work on restoring pipes/modifying cobs and maybe to eventually make my own pipe(that's a stretch goal for me). So was hoping those of you who already have such a workshop would be willing to share pictures so I could make sure to not screw up the overall design. Thanks to all.

Mine's in my garage, I smoke and "make" in there. I'll take pics when I get home. It's totally underwhelming.

My rough plan is 10 x 12 or 10 x 14ft. I am hoping for enough space to have my recliner and most of my pipes. But would like to also have enough room for a all my current equipment and a lathe as I learn to do more.

I am looking at either a metal building 24x30 or a portable building 16x40. The price is similar, but I don't think they can get the portable building up my driveway unless I remove a few trees and trim several more. They don't seem to be too critical about permits out here in the country. I have yet to check into the process here. A portable building does not need a permit, but I think a metal building on a slab does. If I get the metal building it will have 14' side walls with a double loft, an insulated air conditioned room for reloading, gun and pipe repairs and being alone with myself. It will be 12 by 16 by 8. I want a door in the back so that I can shoot out of the building at my target stand 50 yards away. It will have a 6 ft garage door on the side with the shooting door. In front there will be a 9 ft garage door, a walk through door and a window. Looking at 20k, but I am worth it. 😎

If you're planning for tools and hangout space, I wouldn't go any smaller than 10*16. 10*20 would be ideal. I nix'd the shed though, in favor of eventually just walling off half the garage. When I get my sandblaster, I'll definitely need some partitioning.

The recliner would not fit with my tools and the trike, but without the trike you could make it work. A 16 x 20 would give more usable space I think. I certainly wouldn't go below 14 in width, with a 14 x 16 being the minimum for a shop with room to move. 😒

I wasn't going to be storing anything besides pipe making tools and a smoking chair.

My shop is pretty underwhelming too. When we built our house we designed a 15x12 extension to a bay of the garage(mostly to fit a boat or full size truck in). The back wall is 70's era upper and lower kitchen cabinets. The half that has the bench tools is Formica and the other half is butcher block counter top. One side is peg board and parts bin and the other side has my tool chest and shelving. I have years of Smokingpipes and CPCC show posters and my hard hat collection over the top cabinets and tool box/shelf walls. It's a mess.

No way...you guys will write me off as a bum. Don't be too sure; my shop is literally the front room of our home. I don[t have a shed outside that I can use so the lathe is set up against the wall and my workbench is on another wall across the living room. Drill press is on the bench. But it works till I can afford to build a shed, insulate it, and put an AC in it. Since we rent, I'm not too sure I want to put that much money into the property anyhow, though I could go with a small building on skids and just pay someone to move it for me when we move eventually.

My garage has a workbench that is like to utilise at some point... Might be a while before I have any usable tools though.

Have a shed with A/C and a bench that I made...on that I have my 1725 RPM motor with a double shaft mounted and held down with "C" clamps. I have a 6" tripoli buffing wheel, from Harbor Freight, with a 6" carnuba buffing wheel on the other side. It does the job of cleaning stems and buffing pipes to a very nice luster. Pictures would only show what a mess I have in the shed.
This is where Josh (roadsdiverged) and I spend our time smoking pipes and enjoying our time together as good friends ought to. Been a while since Josh's last visit...but between Covid and him working 7 days a week, he hasn't had the time to come down for a visit. He knows he is always welcome even if we have to wear a mask to do it.

The company that does their install their buildings wants a grand to move it. I have an older barn roofed 8x10 building that would be usable with a little work, benches on both sides, and another one that is aluminum 8x14 that's coming apart that's OK for lawn tools, but I want one building that will do everything. I may have to make do for a while.
