So yesterday I pulled an old B.C. bulldog down from a rack in my bedroom {a smaller pipe that usually takes a good many relights to keep lit}and filled it with a black ,moist aro ,from Milan tobacconist, that is equally hard to keep lit...I have that same combo going now...
Call it luck or good fortune ,or whatever you like ,but this combo keeps going like the energizer bunny; I just sat the pipe down to check on a pot I have cooking on the stove, and found the pipe smoldering when i returned.
It's rare for me...how often do you find a combo like this?

I do pack them very lightly though.

It just happens sometimes. Serendipity.

I've never had it happen with moist tobacco, but if I have a good hot ember from my true light I find the pipe has a better chance of staying lit.
Also, a uniform pack will help too.

I had just the opposite yesterday. Tried Mac Baren 7 Seas Black for the first time. It actually seemed just a little dry, but I couldn't keep it burning!!!!! I re-lit and re-lit and re-lit. If I stopped puffing to take a sip of water, it would go out. I loosened it, thinking I'd packed it too tight and that seemed to help for a couple minutes, then it went out again. I gave up. Strange.

From the world of Slow Smoking, there is the well documented pipester from Spain or Italy who famously sets down his pipe after an hour or so, then goes off to the restroom to do his business, returns and calmly picks his pipe back up and keeps puffing. Some of those Euro-pros routinely keep a pipe going for hours (literally). I myself consider 45 minutes my par, though once I did go an hour and 22 minutes.

While 45 minutes to an hour is about the max,for me as well, I did somehow manage to take third place in a slow smoke contest back in 1982...just luck, but a big moment for newbie. My thread took a wrong turn somewhere , as I was thinking more about a perfect match of a troublesome pipe and a troublesome pipe tobacco; how sometimes, two wrongs CAN make a right.
Good input from all...thanks for your thoughts!
