I've only recently started to get in to meerschaum pipes. There's something I was wondering about. Sometimes, when smoking, a small bit of tobacco gets caught in the draft hole and obstructs the draw. When smoking a briar, it can usually be removed with a pick and then smoking can continue. With a meerschaum, I worry that the pick would chew up the inside of the chamber. This doesn't happen often, but when it does I'd like to know what to do.

I would like to think a gentle push of a pipe cleaner through the pipe would shift it without any issue.
Pipe cleaners are supposed to be used in meerschaum pipes aren't they?

My experience with meerschaum is that it is tougher than you think. I wouldn’t go at it with something razor sharp, but a normal pick with less than a heavy hand should be fine.

A pipe cleaner core wire can dig into the wall of a hot pipe and damage it if you push it in too far.

I've only ever used a pipe cleaner on meer stems, Q-tips on the mortise and draft hole, and handi wipes to wipe out the chamber.

I'd avoid the bristle cleaners, but regular cotton pipe cleaners, applied gently, shouldn't be a danger. I've got several meerschaums that are decades old and they have taken well to the use of pipe cleaners while smoking.
