It seems that a deer has taken up residence in the woods behind my house..Evert night it cleans out the seeds in my bird feeder..My friend says the best way to stop that is to put it in the freezer..My wife says it's just hungry..I guess I will be buying more bird seed and just hope it moves on it's merry way.

Deer can be a nuisance. Just keep putting your bird seed out and wait until hunting season. If you are too near another house, find a friend who bow hunts and offer to share the venison with him.
If you decide to do that, follow Ron's advice and put a corn feeder out.

There has been a Mule Deer buck and four does hanging about our village. They go from one field to the next. Oats and alfalfa aplenty and have become tolerant of human presence.
Our principal poacher died a few years ago. So, they have a chance. I just hope they skedaddle before Deer Season starts.

there's a "pocket" of ritzy homes in the city behind the hospital/re-hab center that's infested with the damn things. A constant issue at every city council meeting. Nothing firm as been decided over past 5-6yrs. It's the rich folks' problem. My street a major state hi-way, much truck traffic, no problem

They are a major nuisance where they can't be hunted. In the expensive town of Wimberley Texas we used to have to push through a heard of 3 or 4 dozen to get from our friends house to the river. Most of the rich people that own the ranches around the town are anti hunting. We haven't seen any at our new house, but the neighbor has a stand at the back of his property. We've hit 3 in cars on the highway over the years. Estimates are that there are several times as many deer 🦌 as there were before the Pilgrims arrived.

We have Mule Deer that come through and I gave them a small "kiddie pool" held down with large rocks. When it's over 100°F and dryer than dust, I feel a great empathy towards the desert wildlife. However, they are not eating our bird seed and, if they were, I'd give them the corn as suggested ... salt lick too.

I don't feed them anything at all in particular. We have lots around here as the valley I'm in is a protected habitat. But they seem to do well enough subsisting on blackberry vines and pine nuts. The thorns don't bother them at all. I have a small pond next to my house and I occasionally see them there stopped for a drink. I've heard they are relatively stupid animals, but it seems they are smart enough to know where to go where people aren't shooting at them. Anyway they are not particularly a nuisance here, though every once in a while I read in the local paper that someone has plowed into one on the local highway.

You guys do know that venison is a lean meat and healthier for you to eat than beef?

You guys do know that venison is a lean meat and healthier for you to eat than beef? Our deer and elk tend to be fairly tasty given their diet of alfalfa, oats, barley and wheat. In can be hard to distinguish elk from lean lower USDA grade beef in these parts. I still prefer USDA Choice or Prime BEEF.

There is no meat like a well prepared venison roast. I doubt that I'll ever shoot one on my property.

Growing up in Illinois, all the Venison I tasted had been corn-fed and very tasty. Here in the desert, they eat lots of scrub brush and the like and are much more gamy.

My cousin in Reno years ago gave me a cooler box of venison... having grown up in Colorado I was jacked! I got home an cooked some up and it reeked. My dog wouldn’t even eat it. I came to the same conclusion... I have had Elk from Arizona, and that was different. Good stuff, but they are culled up in the forests in the mountain ranges.

If it was that bad he didn't get it cooled fast enough or didn't clean it properly. No matter what a deer eats it doesn't reek. A guy from work gave me some aligator many years ago and it reeked. Wasn't refrigerated properly I finally had some fresh aligator a couple of years ago and realized it was good.

That was probably some meat gone bad from not getting cleaned and prepared fast enough. I was raised in SE Texas and Louisiana mostly. One of the first things I was taught about hunting deer was to gut it as quickly as you could and then take it back to the truck. One of my uncles used to bring bags of ice with him and would pack the cavity with the ice bags until he got the deer home.

Yep clean quick and ice down. Years ago trappers piled their hides and meat on the side of the road and went back trapping, buyer would come and pick it up, usually 2 or 3 days on the side of the road. Sell the meat, any body who knew about this only ate fresh gator. Sometimes male animals testicles game the meat up, bought a steer one time thru my dads friend, cooked the meat and it smelled like piss, My Mom didn’t believe me, came to Baton Rouge and I let her cook some, it stunk to high heaven, Mom thru the pan and meat away and said I’ll buy you a new pan. Seafood is the worst in keeping fresh, being a shrimper I’ve is your best friend, to this day my wife makes me smell seafood she has bought, strong sea smell, good to eat.

I know the latter will certainly stop it, but I'm just wondering if putting seeds in a freeze before feeding the birds is a trick to stop other animals getting at them.

As far as I know only a bear will open a freezer. The best way to stop the deer is with a 30-30 behind the shoulder.
