Hey guys, I am looking around trying to find a section where there are recommendations for blends for the new smoker. Back in 2008/9 when i was starting out I remember trying and liking the long gone Frog Morton's, I also remember having Squadron Leader, but not sure if i liked it or not.
I am looking for some "entry" level introductions to Aromatics and English or Crossover low Lat blends.
Of course I will take any and all advice with gratitude....
Not sure how well it will play out, but i made some 3oz purchases of bulk from the "Match" brand on Pipes and Cigars, to see how I like the combinations of different tobaccos. I was sleepy when I did it, so I am going to look over the order now and hope that I got some different styles to compare. The goal is to start to identify what I like and don't like.

Full Aromatics: Sutliff Creme Bruleé C&D Autumn Evening Newminster Blackberry Brandy

Sounds like Jason ^^^ has pretty much covered all the bases...I'd add butternut burley to the list above as sort of an aro. Trout Stream and B.B. Alamo as well as Candy corn from P&C.

So, my best friend doesn't know yet, but he is going on this journey with me, we are going camping (guys weekend trip) for his birthday next week and I am building a pipe starter set for him with 2 MM Cobs, and 1.5 oz of all the tobaccos I get for my self witch as of now is:
Match Early Morning Match Nightcap Match Bourbon Street Sutliff Mark Twain
I also bought him a 2 pipe pouch, multi-tool and lighter. All the tobaccos will be in tins and I am making labels that have the name, date of purchase and the types of leaf in the blend.
I am about to pull the trigger on Boswell Countryside and Bear Blend as well

McG, if you don't live in the democratic people's republic of washington, you can order good stuff by mail. I'm a big fan of Edward's tobaccos. The Englewood, Colorado store is great for doing mail order, and I would recommend Scottish Moor as an aromatic (but nowhere near overpowering) and Special Balkan if you like english/latakia blends.

Hearth and Home Day Break. Available in bulk. Several think of it as a match for EMP. Yet different. An english on the lighter side.
I am not big in to aro’s. But the Ken Byron Burley morning pipe. A light aro. Is Usually my morning smoke on days off.

You've done a great thing for your friend. I hope he (and you) take to some of those tobaccos well.
I'm not sure if Carter Hall is entry level, or what category to put it into, but it's not a harsh blend and a great smoke. Might be one to pick up on the way to your trip. If I recall correctly, it's one that can be picked up in a lot of shops in USA.
Enjoy the trip.

So I have smoked through all the tobacco listed in previous post, so far the English blends are my favorites, and the burly is right in there. I am going to smoke through them again, but all in all they are pretty mild. But I picked these because they were mild. I think my cigar smoking history is coming into play, and I think I need to move into something with bolder flavors Also, i need to find a Perique blend to sample....

If that's not strong enough try Rum Twist. You can search on Tobacco Reviews by strength. You can also select the type of blend, such as English or Cigar Leaf.
