I know this is a long shot but, would anyone know I might find some briar pieces that could be cut to about 1"x1"x3" or longer. For this part of the project scrap or chunks that are questionable would work.

The dimensions are on the larger side for the diameter.

Most of the blocks carvers end up using are probably 2"x2.5"x3" for one pipe. I'll check my scrap box and see what my biggest ones are. How big is the end product you're going for?

The size if the end product depends on the the size of the material used. Some of my raw materials need 2 pieces of wood 2 1/16" long. The OD is about 10mm. Sorry about being closed mouth about this. Until a sample is made can't prove concept. In the morning I will have better idea which set of raw materials to use.

Fine idea....good luck with your project! Working with wood brings home an earthy-ness to it. Feels good in the hand and looks good to the eye.
