I dislike cars, they're so expensive and take up so much space. I'm moving to Guadalajara soon and as yet another city with terrible public transport and low walkability it's starting to look as if I'll have to buy one again.

"Car AC Compressor Repair & Replacement Cost
On average the labor cost to install a new ac compressor is $400 but costs can range from $300-$500 according to Buy Auto Parts. As for the AC compressor your mechanic estimates, you should expect to pay $500 – $1,900 for the parts alone.Jul 1, 2019"

I suppose, where you live, AC is kinda essential. Here, if the AC breaks, there's no noticeable difference.

...then I was reassigned to Italy.

There are other things besides the compressor like the filter drier, flush for the system, new oil, freon, vacuum pump, line tools, o-ring kit it all adds up. Do not buy it rebuilt and call around for the best price. Sorry for the hardship.

My daughter had an issue with her car, and it failed at her boyfriends house. A "neighborhood mechanic" offered to fix it for a low, low price. He ruined her engine in the process. We then took it to the shop that I've trusted for years (not as cheap...but always dependable); he had to replace the top half of her engine due to the neighborhood guy's mistakes. He claimed to have been a mechanic for 30 years before retiring. In that instance...she didn't just get what she paid for...she got much worse.

I want a totally autonomous car as soon as they perfect them. We never drove in Mexico City after the first couple of days. Plenty of taxis and the subway plus very walkable. I can say that I drove thru the big traffic circle Twice! 😁 They may have bad infrastructure in Guadalajara, but at least the city isn't floating on mud. Best wishes on your move!
