I tend to keep the flame on my pipe lighters small, but my cigar torches large. I have no reason for doing this -- it's just how I do it. How do you?

You are doing it right.
A robust flame solidly ignites a cigar, and can insure an even smoke.
A robust flame is not good for briar, meerschaum or cob and can result in a toasted tool. A butane lighter delivers the most heat, possibly charring a rim, but carefully administered in a soft flame will deliver the goods. . A Zippo type lighter delivers less heat. A match burns cooler, and if you are not fighting the wind it will suffice.

One thing that I will add here. Hemp wick burns with little heat. No sulfur smell and less going into the ash tray.

I'd be afraid to use a torch lighter on my pipe. I'd rather not take the risk. Zippo or matches are the way to go for me.
I don't smoke cigars so I wouldn't know how to light them properly.

I used a torch lighter a couple of days ago and singed the rim of my Bings Favorite. I am using matches until I find my lighters.

When I bought my torch insert for my Zippo, I bought a can of Xicar fuel with it. When that ran out, I picked up a cheap can of Ronson butane. Apparently, all butane fuel is not created equal. Im getting weak, spotty burn now, and I aint too happy about it.
Using matches more just because of the agrevation

Matches, or the old colibri pen lighter I just recently repaired. Lower flame height, and focused on the tobacco and not the briar.

Is there a trick to using the Zippo w/ pipe insert? My flame seems huge, but the other night I was having difficulty drawing the flame down into the pipe. Part of me thinks this is because I was packed too tightly, so will try keeping it a little looser to see if that helps. But how much wick are people using with the Zippo, and does anyone have trouble getting the flame to come down, particularly during re-lights towards the end of a bowl?

Always use "premium" butane. Minimum 5x refined. I have been using Colibri butane, and that has done me very well. Every new lighter I buy always gets drained and refilled with high quality butane. And yes. Smaller flame for pipes, and a larger flame for cigars. A double flame or more tortch is probably better for cigars.

@ Waldron
I also use the pipe insert on my Zippo. The size of the flame depends on whether I've just added lighter fuel or not - huge when I fill it, teeny when it's almost out. I use Zippo lighter fluid.
The single biggest problem with the Zippo over matches is I can't get the flame down into the bowl, especially on tall bowls like my General cob. I smoke indoors, so no wind, but those little HEB cactus matches worked much better, and were much, much cheaper.

Perhaps just a problem with the Zippo design? I'm curious to hear how many people have had this same problem, and if there is a "trick" to getting it to work properly. I have to smoke outside and that's why I've been drawn to the windproof Zippo. But perhaps matches is the way to go.

I use the Thunderbird gas insert and I am happy with it, but I don't smoke outside as a rule.

I have the same insert in one of my Zippos. It wont pull down into a deep pipe either. Im sure its just the general design.

The zippo does not go on top of the pipe. The pipe goes upside down on the Zippo. Your Welcome!

I find the initial light almost impossible with the pipe insert. As the tobacco level drops a little, it's much much better.

One thing that I will add here. Hemp wick burns with little heat. No sulfur smell and less going into the ash tray. I have tried that, on the advice of a friend who smokes other stuff. It was fine once I got used to it. I am not sure how it would work outdoors. My friend keeps a long string wrapped around her standard bic lighter, so it is almost an extension of her bic.
