I imagine most of us know the warning signs. You start keeping a list of tobaccos you want to try, then you think you should stock up on the ones you know you already love. Before too long you have an online cart full of various tins and bulk options that you know you don't need, but you can't help it. You may try to put it off and say it's just a wish list, but soon you've just got to order it, because what if something goes out of stock?
What is it about the way a tobacco blender describes their latest creation that makes it sound so utterly irresistible? Hints of fig, prunes and other dark fruit? yes, please! Smoky and full bodied? Gotta have it. Ribbon cut, plug, flake, crumble cake, of course you need some variety, right?
These are all symptoms of a serious condition called Tobacco Acquisition Disorder (TAD). It's typically not treatable, you can only try to manage the symptoms. It's also not usually fatal, although the fatality rates skyrocket for married patients, oddly enough. The one sure sign of TAD is that once you place your order, as much as you can't wait to get those new tins in and add them to your collection, you can't help but think about what you DIDN"T purchase.
I think I've caught a serious case myself, here's hoping I never recover.

I've experienced this condition sporadically. So far only a mild case.

Glad I got through this "addiction" back in the early 2013's. Stocked up on several blends that are no longer available except at ridiculous prices...so now I have a cellar that gives me every type of tobacco that I could possibly want...sure there are newer blends available, but I don't spend any more money on tobacco as my cellar is full til the day I die. Sharing is now my pleasure.

No idea. Not even all of it, but once I hit my goal of three times my body weight, I've mostly stopped other than keeping regular use blends topped up.

In the first 20 or so years that I smoked pipes I probably went through over 300 blends..It cost me a lot of bucks to find out that I only really liked about 10 percent of them..I try something new now and then, but these days I mostly stick with what I know I like,

I just ordered a tin of that stonehenge flake. Can't wait to try it. Someday I hope to have a cellar with tons of tins!

Agreed. It's fun to try new stuff, but to find what you like and stock up on it will be great.

Some people have it bad. I have a little case of it, but due to the prices over here, it's one tin a month for me.

I have no idea how to post a gif file. I was going to do the guy taking his sunglasses off in disbelief, because that's a truckload of tobacco!

LoL! Usually when your wife finds out how much you spent on tobacco is the cure for tad. Ain't that the truth. Ha! Although the Mancave isn't off limits for my beloved Blondie Baby, she doesn't spend much time up here. But..... When she does come up here, she never neglects the opportunity to look around my modest little pipe parlor and state something like... "I think you have more pipes and tobacco than anyone I know".... To which I sheepishly reply..... "You're probably right sweetie". ;-)

Tad is an insidious disease. It creeps up on you until you realize you simply need to extend your life expectancy by a decade or two!

It looks worse (or better depending on who's looking) when it's all in one place like that. My wife was like "ANOTHER box of TOBACCO?" when I was loading the first trailer load.

I fear I am beginning to develope the cousin disease to this, known as CAD. So far, Shweetie has shown little interest in inspecting my slowly growing humidor.
In fact, she got an early, unexpected paycheck and the first thing she said was "You better just go ahead and make a cigar order". So I ordered a box of Partagas Black Labels.
I use square jars with sealed lids and bovida packs, so I can separate the jars and stash them around everywhere. I have a 20' horse trailer with living quarters out back that she never goes in, and it has all kinds of cupboards 😊.
Im trying to get out ahead of my smoking, and humidor enough in advance that I can always have some aging for months or even years.
I tell you this, CAD is costing me many hours in the saddle to pay for. Good thing I get paid in cash.
Sometimes I feel like a drug addict. One that dont want no cure. 😅

I think that you are in danger of HAD, Horse Aquisition Disorder.

I understand cellaring, and acquisition disorders in general, but here is where I draw the line. I don't want my collection to decide my smoking habits. I don't want to smoke a particular blend down to make room, or to use it up, and I don't want to refrain from smoking a blend because it is (temporarily?) hard to get. So I have several tins of CULT Abacus, and it seems it is hard to find these days, but I just opened another tin of it because I like it. And while I understand the enthusiasm, I hate feeling of anything being "out of control".
I put together a small three shelf cabinet, about waist high. It has two glass doors and is kind of nice actually. It is full of tins. Jammed full of tins. So my acquisition policy is I will put all tobacco purchases in that cabinet, until it is full, at which time I stop buying tobacco. And when it gets smoked down a bit, I buy more.
I have seen so many of those old movies where the pipe smoker casually reaches over to the tobacco jar on the mantle or on the side table, or from the leather pouch in his inside pocket, to fill his pipe. He never reaches into a cabinet and picks out a tin from a huge assortment. So I have that habit. I open a tin, and empty it into one of the several tobacco jars I have collected, and put it on top of my waist high cabinet. I usually have two or maybe three blends going, so I have three jars on the cabinet. The jars are all English, I think most are Comoys. The kind with the three pronged lid clamp.
So I smoke from the jars, refill the jars from the cabinet, refill the cabinet from Pipes & Cigars or from Smoking Pipes.
I may have tobacco jar acquisition disorder however.

I have a bunch of those Stoke on Trent jars. I tried your method, but the ones that sealed well were the hardest to get open. I think I might be a little bit lazy. If I don't tighten one properly and forget about it for a month the tobacco dries out. But they sure are pretty.
