Wouldn’t that make a great title for a novel?
But seriously, how far into it do you smoke? My current practice is when I get down to it I stir it up with the pipe tool, tamp it, and smoke it for the four or five puffs it gives, then dump it. Doesn’t taste different from the fresh bowl, but I suspect it may not be a Good Thing to do. What say you?

Depends on the blend and pipe. I quit and dump when I don't like the taste. Sometimes it's at the beginning of the bowl, more often at the halfway point. But I have several combinations that I can smoke until I suck ash. I never stir a bowl.

Most all of my pipes have briar still showing down near the bottom. I dump when I can tell the blend has taken on a more robust (nice way of saying arse) flavor.

I've noticed that if the dottle is too moist, it takes over and puts itself out so I can dump it. Otherwise, I usually seem to smoke right to the bottom of the bowl.
However, there is no "correct" way to do this, so whatever gives you the most pleasure is how you should do it.

I'm the same as the op. However, with a cob there is no dottle, so most of the time I get all the way to the bottom.

Many years ago on the A.S.P forum a fella whose elevator didn't seem to go all the way up..Suggested that he was going to set up drop off boxes for dottle. Then he was going to recycle it into some useful product...He also said that he was making pipes out of dryer lint..He then set up a poll to see if most folks thought dryer lint was Blue or Gray..He was an interesting fella.I just can't remember his name..For the record I dump dottle.

I think I’m gonna start just dumping it. It’s gotta be acting as a quasi-filter, at least to some extent.

I'm like the op; if it seems like there is something left other than ash but it just won't take a light well, I'll scrape the ash off the top, dump it, then stir what's left a little and see if it's more conducive to burning like it should. Sometimes it works and sometimes it's a waste of time. But if I was worried about using my time constructively I'd have far fewer bowls enjoyed and far fewer things left on my to-do list! (and yes, it sounds like a great novel).

‘Dottle’ would also be a great name for a Scottie, a Westie, or a Boston Terrier.

I smoke as much as I can. But when the tobacco won't keep lit any more, it's time to dump. I expect a little dottle, just like a cigar there is always something left over.

I smoke till the bottom of the pipe is too hot to touch, then dump it. I likely lose a couple or more puffs this way, but oh well.

I find it depends on the tobacco and how dry it is when I fill the pipe. Some smokes right to ash, others not so much. Also, the bowl shape and depth makes some difference. Mostly I don't worry about it too much, when a light stir and tamp doesn't get me any more smoke, I dump it.
