A lovely pipe. It arrived with a VERY tight fitting shank/stem. I mean very. The briar is quite thin under the metal collar and I am kind of afraid for it. I’m thinking about maybe taking a tiny bit off the stem with some emery paper. Does this sound like a plan?

Go ahead and smoke a couple of bowls in it in the meantime.

Yes, that’s what I’m doing. In fact I’m going to give it a week or so before doing anything to it. I’m just worried about the amount of force needed to remove the stem for cleaning.

If after a week or so it still doesn't want to come apart put it in the freezer overnight.

Don't know if you have a buffer, but hitting the tenon with some carnauba wax will definitely help.

After you try everything except sanding on the tenon, go over the tenon with the tip of a lead pencil, I think you'll see a result you might be able to live with.

Excellent ideas, gentlemen. Many thanks. Goldbrick’s graphite pencil worked a treat and I think the problem may be solved. Joy has come to Mudville!

I was about to suggest that, but some guys get aggravated with graphite on the mortise. I mean, for me, form follows function a lot of the time, so I've used the graphite trick several times.

I used that technique to get a key to work better in the lock. I rubbed the pencil lead up and down the grooves of the key and then put it in the lock. It now slides in effortlessly. I never thought of using it for a tenon, but why not?

If that was the case for me, prior to smoking it, I would express my concerns to the retailer and put the ball in their court.

It’s quite fine now. Snug but easy to remove and replace. And I avoided all that hassle.

Put it in the freezer for 30 minutes. The stem will come off after that as it shrinks just slightly from the cold, Rather than pencil lead then use ultra fine graphite. It'll still be snug but you should have no problem removing it in the future.
