Went in my barn yesterday to fuel up Zero Turn mower, reached for gas cap, something wasn’t right, Damn! Snake was coiled around the gas cap, backed off, knocked him off, ball peen hammer nearby, bye bye snake. It was a pigmy rattler, they usually are around my pine trees, guess storm moved him. Checked out mower very careful.

Wow. Glad we don't have much to worry about in central Illinois when it comes to poisonous snakes.

All we have around these parts is prairie rattlers. Mean little grey-green vipers. 48” would be a really big one. Jack’s been bitten three times in the last four years. I have all my dogs on the Red Rock vaccine. If they’re bitten a bit of swelling is about the major complaint.

I'm so glad we don't have anything like that here. I'm glad you had your wits about you.

Maybe it’s because I was born on St Pats day that my wits were sharp!

Rural residents should always be alert to these visitors. They are ever on my mind when entering shops, barns and sheds.

City boys look straight ahead, country boys always look down because of snakes. I never reach under anything and carry a garden hoe in my truck. Snakes hate the smell of gas vapors. They spray gasoline into holes in Sweetwater to make the snakes come out for the big roundup. Maybe Brad can lease them his lawnmower this year.
