I have a question about pipes in general. Being a newbie to the pipe world and having fun collecting pipes, what is it about Dunhill pipes that commands such a high price point? Yes, they’re absolutely beautiful works of art but so are Peterson’s and many others. Any insight, comments? Thank you.

Gents if I could go slightly off topic, I have a question about pipes in general. Being a newbie to the pipe world and having fun collecting pipes, what is it about Dunhill pipes that commands such a high price point? Yes, they’re absolutely beautiful works of art but so are Peterson’s and many others. Any insight, comments? Thank you. They have the Name and the Spot. They are maybe a little better than the average Peterson or Savinelli.

For me, the major attraction is the fact they are dated. I have birth year Dunhills for my father, myself, my wife, both daughters, and my anniversary year.

Yep. My only Dunhill is a 1950 BY lovat. I would rather have 3 or four Radice pipes than another Dunhill.

I can help you they can be dated accurately and that is all. I could blather out other insults about them but then folks would want links and start crying and stuff. Buy the Dunhill pipe book it is a good read.

I have several Dunhill's and they are among my best smoking pipes. They are highly collectible for a reason. Dunhill is to English pipes what Castello is to Italian pipes. However if you simply want a good smoking pipe, there are many brands and artisans to pick from. In a blind test between a Dunhill and a Peterson, yes, I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference (as long as it wasn't one of those horrible P Lips). But Dunhill offers consistent high quality construction from bowl to tip of stem (no hit or miss, or slightly wider lip on one and narrower on another), consistent quality briar, dating (as noted above) and important for me as regards Dunhill, the classic English shape like no other pipe offers. These all contribute to my decision to purchase a Dunhill. I don't have many, but I treasure those I do have.

Being able to date them opens up a market that other makers missed on. Birth year, graduation year, wedding anniversary, sons and daughter birth years, etc. They are a quality pipe which doesn't hurt.
