When I was in college, I was diagnosed with a form of schizophrenia called "schizoaffective disorder (bipolar type)." I have learned that approximately 90% of people with schizophrenia use tobacco. I thought that was interesting. I can't speak for everyone, but for myself I use tobacco because sitting on the front porch with a nice pipe calms the chaos in my head and gives me better focus. Like I said, interesting.

Artistic ability is often a trait too.

It is also interesting that you would say that. I'm a painter.

It is also interesting that you would say that. I'm a painter. My first wife, God rest her soul, was bipolar manic/depressive. She was an abstract artist and wrote poetry.

I'm sorry to hear that, brother. I'm glad you have found that tobacco helps to settle the 'chaos in [your] head'. I didn't know that statistic about tobacco use. I would never have thought it was that high.

Interesting indeed. I have known many artists in my time. Among them, not a few schizoid personalities. Mostly among painters. Very seldom among sculptors and photographers. Most of them highly functional, and very few with obvious... problems. I never found it a barrier to friendship.

Being hyper creative myself, these types of "issues" can be part of the package. I can get very bi-polar. Caffeine and nicotine help keep me calm and not on a roller coaster. Personally I like being a little nuts.

It definitely helps with my issues. From picking a tobacco, to the last puff. My whole ritual settles my mind and helps me refocus.
On bad days I can go through my cellar and get lost in the ridiculous amount I've accumulated.
(Depression, anxiety, adjustment disorder)

Nicotine helps my anxiety. It has a paradoxical effect. Caffeine, on the other hand ramps me up, and makes it worse.

I was shown a list of 10 PTSD symptoms once, I had 8 of them. The "art" of smoking cigars and pipes definitely helps keep me on an even keel and easier to get along with. Keeping a really hot temper tamped down and hidden away has always been my greatest personal battle. A long, leasurly, meditative smoke on a regular basis surely helps

Caffeine has zero affect other than allowing me to concentrate. Back in the day before riddelliine speed did the same thing to me, made me placid and calm.

Personally, I love being crazy (not really a good description) as it keeps others at bay.

Ran out of coffee at work once, by the end of the shift everybody thought I was on coke and reciting some insane stand up routine. Coffee helps. Lots of coffee.

Not a recommendation, but I met a guy who was on leave from a mental hospital. He told me to be wary in case he got weird. He was perfectly fine for several hours. I found out later that he was on acid. 🤔🙁

Yup, speed made me calmer, downers not so. (A long time ago) Now, any of that or Hippy Cabbage is like putting dynamite in the cracks.
