Where do they go?...and why would they want to run away?? They only have a simple job to do; I give em a nice resting place ,here on my desk ,in an old 1889 match holder along with 2 three-way pipe tools. pipe tools just aren't the same as pipe nails, and I do my best tamping with a pipe nail...not a golf tee, not a roofing nail, not a pipe tool , not even my index finger works so well.
Some time ago , the wife and i discovered that our house was swallowing up many important and useful items, a gold ring , two special cake pans, a small brass owl, hand tool of all kinds ,and now this... where will it all end???

I don't know, maybe they are with the other socks. I lost my favorite Snake tamper over a year ago and I was sure it would turn up when we moved. It hasn't. ๐

It hasn't. ๐ everyone knows it's the dryer that eats up all the socks, but at least the dryer spits out a dime or some pennies now and then to cover the loss...I have nothing to show for my two missing pipe nails, just an empty feeling...

Some place I used to buy tobacco sent a pipe nail with every order. I have no idea what happened to them. Right now I am using a hex head sheet metal screw for a tamper. My alternate is a 300 Blackout shell. My tampers are still packed.

300 WM case works a treat. 30-06 about the same. Seat a bullet point first. Handy.
As for disappearing items, have you somehow annoyed the Good People? Also known as the Faerie Folk, but โGood Peopleโ is better b/c it flatters them and perhaps avoids their ire..
(An Irishman was asked if he believed in the faerie folk. โOf course not!โ he replied. โMere superstition. But they exist nevertheless.โ)

This is a great idea in a pinch - I have hundreds of sheet metal screws floating around and in my car - I'm in the sheet metal trade - Local 18

I lose most of mine. Except the ones from Walt and the one from Adui. They don't leave the porch.
All my others? Hard telling where they go. I cant count how many nails I've heated with a torch, beat flat on one end and lost by the time the sun set.

I have the beautiful tamper made for me by Adui, and my little, antique pocket knife that I use often. Other than that, its a spent .45-70 or .416 Rigby brass. Nails have never lasted me, they're too small and indistinguishable

I made a set of tappers out of two railroad date nails 41 for small pipes and 63 for the bigger ones. Have a tiny forked horn shed to make another some day. The larger date nail works great. Also made an ashtray out of abalone shell and a large cork with a short screw and washer through one of the holes in the shell.

When I was a kid my friends dad was a shopwright for Southern Pacific. He had some great stories about tricks about how to get things done. I still have a big tube of railway wheel bearing grease that he gave me 55 years ago. A little bit goes a long way and anything I grease with it stays greased! Edit : I looked them up and they are really cool. I can see that they would make great tampers. ๐๐

I collect pipe tampers and I picked up a birth year Rail Road pipe nail with a forged spoon from a guy on Instagram a while back. It's a fun little curio but like with most nails the back of the head picks up ash and is very messy.

One pipe nail has returned home ,without a word as to the whereabouts of the other...all is not lost...the flame of hope still burns!!!
