Our rifle deer season opens on the 14th and today I finally get around to checking out deer rifles. I keep them “ready” but always like to check them out immediately before the season opens. Three to check: A Ruger 77/44, bolt action 44 Magnum with 1-4 Leupold Pigplex; a Ruger AmPred in 308 with Leupold 2-7; a Ruger AmPred 6.5 Grendel with Leupold 2-7 Reddot. I’m hoping for a smooth, trouble-free process.

When I do get another chance I will probably just grab a Winchester 94 for old times sake. My other options are 45/70, 45/70, and 450 Bushmaster.

It’s good to have options.

My other son, the fire fighter ,and I are still staying with .45-70's. We got his dialed in a couple of weeks ago.

Not hunting, but shooting this Saturday on a 200 yard range. Shooting a Ruger Precision Rifle in .308 cal with a cheap Barska scope (Barska SWAT 6-24x60). Probably get a good scope for it next year. Zeroed it on this range, about this time last year, and tested various reloads.

Best of luck with the Barska. We do what necessity requires, but my rule of thumb is to prepare to spend at least as much on the ‘scope as I spent on the rifle. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

There's an '03A3 Springfield in the gun safe that's itching for a tryout. A retired army warrant officer buddy of mine is a finder of wonderful things for me like that.

I have a Remington ‘03 (not A3) that I am very fond of. There is a saying about WW1 rifles: The Americans had the best target rifle; the Germans had the best hunting rifle; the British had the best battle rifle.
On another forum a member and I discussed the “head game” of hunting, deer hunting particularly. About how vital it was that you have confidence in your rifle. That’s one reason I check mine close to the season even if I already feel it is ready. I must know that the rifle is dead-on and ready and that it’s all up to me. Otherwise, it’s no fun being in the woods.
