Or does everyone wind up with multiple pipes on their desk that need cleaning? I'm not talking about deep cleaning but just 'needs a pipe cleaner run thru it' before it's smoked again. I only smoke 9mm filtered pipes and sometimes they sit with a wet filter in them for (hate to admit it) up to a week. Most times I'll separate the stem from the bowl and pull the filter out so at least it has a chance to dry for a day or two before I get up the energy to run a pipe cleaner through it. I only smoke one bowl a day generally, and I have nine pipes that I smoke regularly. I'm looking at my wall rack and have two clean pipes remaining so it's time to do some cleaning. Is this normal? Or do most people clean their pipes as soon as they're cool enough (or at least within a day or two)?

A couple of pipe cleaners after every smoke and a swab of the bowl … rarely need to "clean" the pipes.

I’m old school, meaning after 30 years in the service it’s drilled into me to clean my equipment after every use. Long story short: I clean my pipe during my smoke (a quick swab with a pipe cleaner up the stem when it gurgles) and after my smoke. I’ve read it’s not good to leave a used filter in a pipe for over 24 hours as it will not dry and excess moisture doesn’t help the briar. Also, if your budget conscious, your filter will last longer when dry. As my old CSM use to day, “Look after your equipment and it’ll look after you.”

I run a cleaner through each pipe after my smoke, but somehow I still have three or four to clean on Saturday or Sunday morning; It's a labor of love though, so it's not a problem, plus I'm puffing the whole time .

Being retired and having nothing but time..I usually clean the pipe after it cools with a pipe cleaner dipped in vodka and run through the stem and shaft...cleaning the bowl with a paper towel...reaming when necessary.

I run cleaners through my pipe during and after a smoke. Also rub out the bowl. It's the rim I get lazy about cleaning. I wait and then have to do a bunch at one time.

I disassemble mine after every smoke, wipe the mortise and draft hole with Q-tips, run a pipe cleaner through the stem, wipe out the chamber with a paper towel, reassemble everything and polish.

I usually roll up a paper towel and swab out the bowl after every smoke - and I should run a pipe cleaner through it then too, but I usually don't until after 2 or 3 smokes. My bad. Now and then I let the ashes set overnight, then knock them out and swab the bowl - but that's just laziness on my part.
I've got a dozen pipes I've bought on Ebay that need a deep cleaning/sweetening because they don't "smoke true" - meaning the true flavor of the tobacco is altered by the old residue in the pipe. Need to get to them soon. It does make a great difference.

I use paper towel to clean the bowl, I also use a pipe cleaner to clean the stem after each use. I do this because I don't want any cake. I also will use a little nose wax and wipe and a micro fiber cloth to buff my pipes before putting them away.

Yes and No. Yes..I have a bunch that need cleaning No..I only clean when needed. Do run pipe cleaners through every couple of times. BUT, I am a smoker & not a hobbyist. Probably a big difference there.

Is that a Winslow Crown 300 on top of that pile? Perhaps purchased from SPC's estate section?

Corkscrew a paper towel and a quick pipe cleaner no deep cleaning in years and barely any road tar cake build up. Some folks like a thick cake I am not a member of that club.

As many here know, the vast majority of my stable are pipes that are estates that I've refurbished.
That being said, after restoring a briar I then smoke the heck out of em. I do clean em up frequently, but they definitely get smoked.
My routine is usually to just let em sit after I've smoked em. I clean em out with a pipe tool and cleaners before I light em up for the next round.
Once or twice a year I ream em out, polish em up and buff up the stems.

I do a quick process after every smoke...pipe cleaner thru the stem and mortise (with stem out), and a quick brushing out of the chamber with the pipe cleaner. Long time before any one pipe needs a deep cleaning, I don't let them pile up. Everyone is different!

I typically smoke 2 or 3 pipes in the evening. I usually clean them before going to bed. Pipe cleaners with the stem removed; regular for the stem, bristle for the shank, fluffy to dry the shank and swab the bowl.
