In my first purchases of pipes I bought a Lorenzetti Avitus and a Baraccini Copper-banded Rhodesian. Both are nice pipes and quite pretty but I’ve discovered that I don’t much care for short pipes. (These are small little guys.) They smoke too hot and too close to the nose for me. Anybody else have a quasi-aversion to small, short pipes? Maybe I should just stretch their stems!

I don't care much for short pipes in general. I have a few that smoke well a small reverse calabash, and a Group 3 Dunhill Lovat smoke especially well. But a few others have the problems you described. Also, with the length of my nose, a nosewarmer becomes a noseburner! 😁 Edit: I have put longer stems on a couple of pipes with good results.

You just cannabilize stems from existing pipes?

Not much of a fan of shorties either. Almost all of my regular smokers are at least 6.5 in. or more. Most falling in at the 7 in. plus mark. I always feel like shorties are hiding under my nose...

You just cannabilize stems from existing pipes? I have, yes. I bought a box of a eighteen take off stems on eBay several years ago. It is surprising how many fit with little work. I have used about 10 on various pipes. A couple you can't tell it wasn't the original. On others you can tell, but it's not awful and they smoke fine. Most need a little bending, but that's easy with a pot of boiling water.

I actually like a shorter pipe. I have a Devil Anse that is one of my go-to pipes, and it's really short. My Joe Case bent egg is pretty short, and its probably my favorite pipe of all.
A shorter pipe is easier for me to clench and handle when Im out and about. And I dont tend to freight-train when I smoke a pipe, so excess heat isnt a problem.
I use the longer ones when sitting and relaxing, of course, but my short pipes definitely have their active spot in the grand scheme of things.

While I like my nose warmer, I do prefer a longer pipe too.

I've never thought I would like short pipes so I don't have any.

Don't care for them either, smoke in the eyes hurts.

I like short pipe when I want to pack it around outside. Front shirt pocket pipe. Pocket that buttons over the top.

Most of mine are about 5.5 inches or longer if I had to guesstimate the length. About average I’d say.

I have a short pipe by Don Warren, that is a wonderful smoker... he is an exception compared to other shorty pipes I own though.
I will try and post a pic when I get back home.

My only short pipe serves a niche. It's also a small chamber pipe, its miniature billiard. When I want to test a tobacco, or just dont have time to enjoy a full smoke I pull it out. I did find recently that with cube cut it still smokes quite long... (20+ minutes on a 3/4 bowl of PS41 with about 6 relights)

I have a Don Warren morta pot that is shorter than most of my pipes, but I wouldn't call it a nosewarmer. And it smokes wonderfully.

Don't care for short pipes. Kind of feel like they may set my face on fire. I have pipes from 5 1/2 inches to 7 1/2 inches. Plus a calabash and a church warden.

I too have a Lorenzetti avitus. It truly is a nice little pipe. When it gets hot I let it rest. Longer stems I am sure can be used from an old pipe.

My only shorty is a Bones that was given to me. It makes Burleys taste better than any of my other pipes. Im not sure if its the size, or what, but now it's a Burley only pipe.
I wont buy another one though. They dont suit me.

I like shorter pipes. My average is between 4.5" and 5.5". I do have one Bing that's about 6.5".

It seems super nice, I was thinking to get a nose warmer to bring with me while walking outside, but I was worried also that I wouldn't like it if I had some nasty smoke going through the nose..

My only real shorty is a cheap bent meer. It works fine. I like a small bowl, so the small MM cobs do the trick.
