Tried it in Egypt when I was with the Army. It was ok. The blend my guide chose for me was apple flavour. Reminds me of an aromatic. 

My friends and I liked it in college only probably we had was getting the coals initially light. Mint was a go to. Haven’t smoked one in a long time.

I was curious about hookah, a few years ago. I went to a local hookah lounge and tried it. The clerk set me up with some aromatic. If you smoke an aromatic tobacco, you get a hint or a taste of the flavor. The hookah is subtle like a telemarketer, that is behind on his rent.

It was fun to see the billows of smoke that I could produce. I suppose that this is probably not the healthiest way to smoke.

Hookah Smoking Compared With Cigarette Smoking
While many hookah smokers may think this practice is less harmful than smoking cigarettes, hookah smoking has many of the same health risks as cigarette smoking.1,2

The amount of smoke inhaled during a typical hookah session is about 90,000 milliliters (ml), compared with 500–600 ml inhaled when smoking a cigarette.4
Hookah smokers may be at risk for some of the same diseases as cigarette smokers. These include:3,4
Oral cancer
Lung cancer
Stomach cancer
Cancer of the esophagus
Reduced lung function
Decreased fertility
