Sometimes when I'm sitting in my chair smoking a pipe..My thoughts drift back to the past..I think of places I've smoked my pipe and those I've smoked with..Fond memories of almost 50 years of pipe smoking..Maybe one or two of them weren't quite so fond. I've had several broken stems from dropped pipes over those years..One stem got broken when the dog got hold of a pipe..One event I remember really well. One summer day here in Carolina the temp was a bit over 90 degrees..I was at a smoke about 20 miles from my house.I picked up a cigar and smoked in the car on the way home..The next day the car smelled so bad my wife wouldn't get in it. I had to clean the car and fumigate it before she would..Thinking of the past reminds me that It's strange how folks lives move in different directions. and friends drift apart..I miss them but I guess that's how life is.

Very profound musings, Larry. I'm sure many of us experience the same things. I know that I do at times.

Me, I’m thinking about my annual physical, coming up in two weeks, when I will tell my sawbones that I have resumed pipe puffing after 35 years on the tobacco wagon.

Seriously, it's none of his business.I mentioned it to my doctor once and he charged SS for anti smoking counseling. It is all over my medical records and I can't get rid of it.

Thanks for the advice. My doc is a good guy. We spend most of our visits talking about shooting and hunting. If anybody fills out that initial survey and admits to having guns in the house he throws it away.

We talked about the medical business problems, politics, hobbies, etc.

I find I’m in my happy place every time I have a bowl. Don’t believe I’m thinking about anything else. Different strokes for different folks.

Me, I’m thinking about my annual physical, coming up in two weeks, when I will tell my sawbones that I have resumed pipe puffing after 35 years on the tobacco wagon. I've been on my deathbed and not disclosed I smoke a pipe or cigars and I've never been called out. I'd put on some fresh clothes and keep my mouth shut. I broke the most important tooth in my mouth that holds up my pipe a month ago and I got close to telling the dentist the situation but thought better of it. Happily the crown worked out perfectly!

My thoughts are never far from the collection and the hobby. I speak with and email pipe guys every day. I spend way to much time on Zoom chats with collectors from all over the world every week. My life has revolved around the hobby and I've traveled across the country yearly for decades in search of smoke filled fun. Many of my best times have been spent in smoke filled hotel rooms with guys who understand my passion for pipes and this hobby. My pipe friends are some of my closest friends!

One of the companies that has given me a job offer sent the insurance packet. An admitted pipe smoker will pay $100 more monthly in their portion of the co-pay.
Doctors offices and company paid industrial clinics are more than eager to list you as even a former smoker if you have admitted to smoking a cigar once... after that it becomes part of your medical history forever.
Nope, I don’t smoke!

To Larry’s point though, a good bowl of pipe tobacco is a great way to sit back and decompress from the crazy things going on in the world, and in a group setting like a pipe club meeting enriches the time spent with friends.

My Dr is a young man with my name Bradley, we both enjoy reading and I give him tips on reading material, he does the same. Once he asked out of the blue, Do You Smoke. I replied I won’t tell you I smoke a pipe. He looked at me, I then said Where were those anti smoking bastards when I was in the jungle of Loas, did they care about my health? No they didn’t and they don’t care now. I won’t tell you I smoke a pipe, I’m sure you understand. He wrote Non Smoker!

I sometimes bore people with my story about the Eleventh Commandment. When Moses took the tablets down to the people he could only tuck two under his arms, five commandments each. There was a third tablet he was going to go back for, but when he got down the hill the people were in such a turmoil that he never made the trip. There was only one commandment on that third, forgotten, slab: Thou shalt not force thy brother to thy will.

I saw a study once that said that pipe smokers lived longer than non-smokers. I know that you can probably find a study to say the opposite of anything. Statistics, you know. But like everyone else, I will choose to believe the science that agrees with my opinion.
