In my perhaps limited experience Squadron Leader Ready Rubbed, is the definitive " English" blend harmonious, equitable & a perfectly balanced mixture. If you are a heavy smoker & your taste buds are burnt out, then maybe you will not appreciate, the subtlety of this special blend, some need a strong curry to excite their taste buds, & plenty has been written on this classic. As someone who favours rich , plugs, ropes & pigtails at times , especially in my own mixes, I return to Squadron leader as the essence of the English taste in a ready rubbed blend. 1817 similarly is the subtle epitomy of the classic quality English art of blending, but if you do not favour Squadron Leader , maybe 1817 ready rubbed is not for you either, but each to his own. But if you can give it a try, it perfectly complements the components of Squadron Leader, & has subtleties of its own , but it is only my own taste we are all different. Others may find them bland, if they favour strong spice blends for their challenged taste buds. Enjoy your piping in peace brothers of the pipe. PS, it is good to fast occasionally from the pipe to regain a taste for those old classic favourites from your past smokes.

I have a stash of 10 tins of SL with Perique and some of the standard version without Perique. I recently tried the regular SL and found it very bland. Nothing stood out in the flavor department. If you like it.... that's all that matters..

Are there two versions of SL or did they change the recipe at some point?

Charlie, the SL with perique was a limited run product. Squadron Leader was the first tobacco I bought on my first trip to England in 1992. At that time we knew nothing about Samuel Gawith in the USA.

I quite like SL during the winter months. An easy all day smoke.

From Tobacco reviews, observations of a couple fans of this blend: www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/1040/samuel-gawith-squadron-leaderI remember on another thread, about another blend, someone complained about the tinned versus the bulk option.... (I am thinking Per Jensen of MacBaren responded) saying that the same tobacco prepared for the tins is the same as the bulk. That only makes sense....certain blends seem to do better when packed in smaller, and airtight containers...I suspect with the aromas inherent in that english blend "bleed off", when not in an airproof container. Specifically, that second reviewer said that the lakeland essence was gone. It's not a bad idea to check tobacco reviews before buying a blend in bulk.

I seem to remember trying this in the early 2000's and it made an impression on me that sad stay away from me!! Maybe my taste has changed but I am not risking a tin purchase to try it out again!

I will try SL eventually, but there are many others ahead of it on my list of "wanna trys". I will get to it though.

I like to add a pinch of Saint James Perique to my jar-aged Squadron Leader... really a wonderful smoke to be savored!
