I am very new to the cigar world -- I've probably smoked only a couple of dozen cigars so far. Most of the time things go fine, but about 1 cigar out of 3 or 4 seems to get "plugged." The draw gets very tight. This is not specific to one type of cigar; they all do it. I've found a solution: poke the cigar with the poker on a Czech tool. Is this normal for cigars, or am I doing something wrong? At first I figured that I must be cutting them wrong, but I've tried different methods of cutting and it makes no difference.

My plugged rate is probably closer to 1 in 25 but I always keep a long, very thin precision philips head screwdriver at hand. I think it works better than my Drawpoker. The only cigars that I’ve regularly had issues are Habanos.

No you’re on track. Sometimes it’ll be a stem lodged between the binder and filler blocking the air flow. Normally I’ll just use a paper clip and poke a hole or remove the stem whenever possible.

When this happens to me, I lock the cigar's end where I puff from and gently squeeze it, let go, squeeze it again, let go. It usually becomes much better afterward.

Follow above recommendations & do what you are doing. After a couple of draw problems, with mine, I toss the rest if I cant return them. No, tight draw is not normal.

The same holds true when you realize after packing the pipe and the draw is restricted. A Czech tool poker straight down to the draft hole, a pipe cleaner up the stem and into the bowl, and you are up and running.
Sometimes caused by a small bit of tobacco blocking the airway.

All good advice. Happens with the cheapest and most expensive cigars.

Common deck screw works for me, also rolling hard butt end back and forth .

OK, followup question: is there a tool specifically designed to poke cigars, or is the Czech tool I've been using the best choice?
