I am often reminded of the movie "Witness for the Prosecution", 1957. Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton, Elsa Lanchester., Torin Thatcher, Henry Daniels, John Williams. From Agatha Christie's excellent book. Anyway, the wonderful elderly Una O'Connor is testifying in the Queen's open court about a murder and complaining that the National Health Service has not provided her with a proper Hearing Aid. Thus, this limits her witness abilities. The Judge, admirably played by Mr. Frances Compton (1885-1964), remarks, "Considering the amount of ROT spoken today, you are better off, Madam." That is how I felt about Hearing Aids for many years. Heh. I always enjoyed that movie when it was on, but I don't remember that exchange. Laughton directed it, didn't he? Billy Wilder was given the Director credit. Certainly Laughton carried the laboring oar! "There is still that banana peel somewhere under someone's foot!"

I would've sworn that was Laughton's directorial debut (or only directorial effort?). Guess not.

Happy Wednesday everyone (yes I double checked this time Jason and Urb). Rain expected today and not looking too promising. It’s just as well as I’m getting my COVID shot later this morning. From what I’ve read in previous posts, guess I can expect a sore arm and discomfort for the next few days.

I have much trouble hearing people speak. Those who are not trained as stage actors might as well remain silent as I will never hear them. So, for less than $30 I bought a listening amplifier from Radio Shack. It uses headphones which I have on hand. It is very sensitive and powerful. Has an adjustable 3 Band Equalizer and Balance adjustment. It is slightly thinner than a pack of cigarettes and so fits neatly in a shirt pocket. Two microphones. I can wear this set up for meetings and follow what is being said for a change. The tiny hearing aids popular now are priced way out of my budget so this is a good compromise. glad it worked for you. I thought radio shack went out of business.

My supervisor just got his second vaccination shot yesterday, didn’t show up today for work. I guess he had a nasty reaction and he has been admitted to the hospital.

Windy and overcast here in Allen, Tx. Spent the morning babysitting my 18mo grandson while Shweetie and all the girls went to a spa. Visiting a cigar lounge for the afternoon.

I'm engaged in finding and cataloguing 1000s of images in my files. Found this one of Jack and Emma. Emma dies in 2016 but was Jack's main teacher about bird hunting. She was single-minded and hard-headed, but he learned a lot from her.

Took a little road trip here in Florida today. Drove over to the New Smyrna Beach area and checked out Southern Homebrew and Wine - where I buy most of my wine making kits. They were pretty picked over. Not much in inventory. Having trouble get stuff from the manufacturer. But got to meet the people there and talked about winemaking. They put my name on a list for a Super Tuscan wine kit.
After that, we went to the beach. Saw a Space-X rocket launched from over in Cocoa Beach. Guess it was pretty far away, but still visible. The flame was bright even as far away as we were.

Speedgoats! The Ghosts of the High Plains. Dash up to the top of that hill to see where they went and they are... gone. Disappeared. I've had it happen so many times I don't bother anymore. Not the smartest critters out here, but with a definite talent for now you see 'em, now you don't.

Holy smokes it’s freezing outside! As I’m an outside smoker, tried to ride out the cold rain and wind. Sadly Mother Nature won.

What the Lord Judge said was, "My dear, Miss MacKenzie, considering the rubbish that is being talked nowadays you are missing very little." Nope, still nothing. I mainly just remember the interplay between Laughton and the nurse, particularly over the subject of his cigars. That and the twist ending, of course.

The two together were hilarious.

And another from the way-back machine... Róisín Dubh (roe-SHEEN doov, “Dark Rosaleen”) was my first Shorthair. When we brought here home for the first time we wanted to introduce her to Vito Luigi, our Rottie, in a way that would give him some immediate “ownership” of the newcomer. He was always a great inspector of grocery bags, so we slipped her into one and brought her in with the groceries. When she toddled out of one of the bags his eyes were on stalks. It was love at first sight, on both sides. After that his first duty, after my wife, was Róisín’s safety and security. Disciplining her had to be done carefully as Vito looked askance at such doings directed at HIS puppy. She was his responsibility and he took it seriously.

I have one question. WHo is it that determines whether a federal law is inconsistent with the Arizona Constitution? It seems to me the Supreme Court of Arizona are the ones who should be relied upon to make that call. In any event, the federal government usually enforces federal laws. States have long ducked that one. See Mississippi in the 1960s, Arkansas in the 1950s. Here in NM we have under educated Sheriff's making that determination with sometimes comical results.

Got my big desktop computer cleaned up and put out a new giant mouse pad. Also beat the keyboard up outside so if anybody needs to know how much ash a keyboard can hold give me a ring. No real path to upgrade for about two years waiting on DDR5 memory to become the new standard. 56 outside this morning with a thick fog my favorite kind of way to start the day. The Chihuahua is talking in her sleep on the couch while she is in protection mode. Have a nice day everyone.

A neighbor has one and he is the sweetest boy you ever met.
