Recapping a bit from my post in the "introduce yourself" section: I was a pipe smoker for roughly 10 years, had a nice little collection, lost it all in a fire, now I'm returning to the hobby after 15 years.
All of that means I'm starting from zero as I get back into the swing of building a collection, but I already have a decent idea of what I like and don't like.
Purely on smoking qualities, I prefer a sandblast over a smooth, all else being equal. But, while I do think a sandblast can be extremely handsome, I can stare endlessly at nice grain/birdseye (be it on a pipe or anything else). So, I like a mix of sandblasts and nice-looking smooths.
So, here's the beginning of my new set of pipes:
Savinelli Punto Oro 114KS (blast) Savinelli Punto Oro 316KS (smooth) Peterson Dublin Filter 03 (blast) Chacom Exquise Brown (smooth) Comoy's Pebble Grain 337 (blast) Butz-Choquin Supermate 1789 (smooth) Stanwell Brushed Black 29 (blast-ish)
That gets me a 7-day set, with a nice combination of shapes, sizes, finishes, and prices. I also got a Missouri Meerschaum to try out aromatics.
I'm digging a lot of the new[er] makers I'm seeing, but I want to start with the old classics. My next additions will probably be a Charatan and a GBD. Dunhill will have to enter the mix at some point for completeness, but we'll see.
(One nice thing about returning to the hobby at a later stage in life is I have more disposable income, so I can build a collection a little quicker than my first time around. It took me several years to get to 7 that first time!)

Looks like you've jump started your smoking hobby quite nicely.

Enthusiasm can be dangerous. Yup, I said at 7 pipes I had enough. Said it again at 30 pipes, 36 pipes and now 66 pipes.

I actually stopped at 200. I still buy the occasional pipe, but I get rid of some first.

It took me several years to get to 7 that first time!) My peak years are just a memory. But I fondly remember my first seven day set! For three of the seven I was buying one of the best straight grain pipes I was attracted to a year. Two of those three pipes became the start of collections that I’m adding to this day. My focus has widened but one of these early collections is over a months rotation and growing. Everyone starts collecting as an accumulator but I always tell new collectors having focus is fun and will keep you in the hobby!

I have a bunch of pipes I've collected, mostly older Dr. Grabow's. Don't know why, I just dig em. Anyway, I'm bad at rotating pipes, meaning I really don't. When I do get to smoke, usually once or twice a week, it's my trusty Dr. Grabow Starfire, I think it's considered a Canadian shape, wire rusticated. It's always what I have in my pipe pouch it seems. hehe.

Have you ever sent one in to the factory for refurbishment? I have done it several times and am always pleased with the way things turn out. One time they broke a chip out of the the shank at the mortise and repaired it with a nickel band. They sent it back to me along with a brand new pipe that was similar.

Seems to me you’ll fit right in. Always happy to have another pipe enthusiast join the group. Welcome again!

John, Kevin...you guys likely know that I've got a significant Grabow collection...ranging from pipes from the late 30's to present. Starfire is a very solid line! Grabow are great quality pipes, nevermind the fact that they've been categorized by many as "drug store" pipes. Drug stores have never really carried their specialty pipes, many of which I own. I've shown some Grabows to guys who've been shocked to see what they've made over the years. The factory does a GREAT job on repairs and refurbishment. And, very inexpensive as well! I regularly communicate with Grabow employees, they are a great bunch.

I have a little bit of focus right now -- getting one pipe from each of the old "original" briar makers, as best I can remember them from what I read about pipe history in my previous smoking life. I also wanted to try some of the charcoal filter pipes, so that provided a little focus. We'll see how long it lasts before I just buy whatever I like. (There's a little bit of that, already.)

You have an excellent collection going so far! I love the BC Supermates, have one myself. This is my first BC. I always wanted one, before, but just never got around to getting one. Like I said, money was short, and something else always caught my eye. Anything in particular you like about the Supermates? As I recall, what I had before was an Amadeus (my first pipe), a Stanwell, a Dunhill estate pipe, a Jobey, a Nording, a couple of Savinellis, and a couple of Petersons. Oh, and a calabash I hardly ever smoked.

What shape is your Supermate? Did you get your Amadeus from Iwan Ries? My calabash hardly ever gets smoked either.

I don't think I've seen them anywhere since. I'd love to find another one just like my original.

I'll be darned. And I just spent a lot of time looking at their stock. How did I miss Amadeus? Anyway, neither of those is the model I had. Mine was basically the Sav 316 shape in a rusticated finish. Fit my hand beautifully. It's why I like Sav 316s so much.
Did the BC pic show up in my post above?

Thanks, nightking! Good looking bunch of pipes there. The hobby is more fun with a bit of disposable income! Heh. I was going to say dumpster diving is the only one I can think of that isn't, but even that's probably more fun if you can buy some really nice waders and work gloves, an awesome flashlight, an artisanal gunny sack made from genuine free-range gunny hides, and god knows what else.
