James Garand Birthday was Jan 1, inventor of the M1, who Patton said was the greatest invention, he never received a penny for this, a bill in Congress to give him 100,00$, failed to pass.

One fine rifle. I loved all that I had the opportunity to shoot. Shot well with them, too.
So much nicer than the plastic zip guns they use nowadays.
I see how a combat soldier would develop confidence in his weapon with the M1. Accurate, solid as a brick, hits hard, completely reliable, excellent in hand to hand combat.
I never had any confidence in the M16. Hated them.

The Garand was produced for a nation of riflemen. The M-16 for a nation of TV-watchers.

John Garand was not even an American, but he was still a national treasure. It sucks he never got a nickle...it doesnt surprise me that the scum class in DC would do nothing to compensate him. My Springfield: All parts were correct when it came from the CMP, I don't think it ever saw service. My Harrington and Richardson: Even with my astigmatism causing this right handed person to shoot left handed, that rifle will get the job done, that flier at the bottom was my fault.

From Ron's link. Wouldn't it be grand to have a 1951 International truck and hang your 1951 Garand in it? Travelling in Garand style!

The Germans were too late with the Gewehr 43 and it never matched up to the Garand.

That "Scum" must include Dwight David Eisenhower who was President of the United States for most of the 1950s. If anyone in D.C. appreciated the work of John Garand it would be him. I guess back then, career government employees were not singled out for praise? The NRA certainly could have done something for Garand. Did they? How about all the Veteran's organizations?

“ That "Scum" must include Dwight David Eisenhower ” If it as Brad said, congress failed to compensate John Garand, he didn’t say Eisenhower vetoed it. Am I missing something? “ For his unstinting work at the Springfield Armory, Garand was awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service in 1941 and the Medal for Merit in 1944. He received no royalties or any other monetary compensation beyond his modest civil service salary, and he freely assigned all of his patents to the government. A bill was introduced in Congress to award him $100,000 in appreciation of his efforts, but it failed to pass.” warfarehistorynetwork.com/2016/07/13/garands-wonder-weapon/

Nothing was said about medals and awards, we were talking financial compensation.
He didn’t work for a Veterans organization, or for the NRA.

Nothing was said about medals and awards, we were talking financial compensation. He didn’t work for a Veterans organization, or for the NRA. He was a government employee. As far as I know, the only way a civil servant gains a special reward is if the Executive Branch confers it on them. That means an award. The President, the NRA, the VFW or UFW could have pressed their representatives to award Garand. It takes action.

Not to belabor the point, But: And congress failed, meaning that it could not go forward to the president to sign. If you can cite where congress was out of their authority to do so and that it was the purview of the executive branch, I am all ears. I don't mean to be argumentative, but I do not get it.
