In the past (or so they tell me) most smokers only had one or two pipes. Now most of us rotate. A few years ago I did an experiment where I smoked the same pipe for a month to see what would happen. What happened was... nothing. The pipe came out of the experience just fine. Now I'm going to try to kill a pipe. I'll smoke it exclusively until it gives out, or until several months go by and nothing happens (which I suspect will be the case). The pipe I have chosen for this experiment is a Peterson 150 rusticated bulldog. I'll give it a good cleaning every few weeks. Let's see what happens.

I suspect nothing will happen at all. I'm fairly sure my grandfather only owned one pipe and he smoked it for decades.

You won't possibly live long enough to destroy a Peterson by smoking it. Can't be done. On the old forum a guy tried it with a cob. He was in the thousands of bowls and still going strong.

Good luck with your experiment.

What a way to go... My Dad only had two or three pipes and I'm sure he didn't think about rotating. I do give my few briars a rest, but my cobs have taken all kinds of abuse and are fine. I await your results.

I remember that thread. I think I helped kickstart it again when the other forum started. Haven't really been on since. djo, why not start a new thread with the title something like 'Killing a Peterson Pipe'? Put a picture of the pipe in the first post and document it over the weeks?

Only one way to kill a pipe...just don't clean it. That won't kill it. It will clog up and taste nasty, bbutwwith a little cleaning it will be fine.

Only one way to kill a pipe...just don't clean it. Drive over it? That would do it. But being a Peterson, it better be something big. 😁😎🤠

Well, right now it just looks like a pipe. If the appearance changes significantly I'll post pics, but I suspect it will just continue to look like a pipe.

My grandfather only smoked Kirstens. I have the 4 different bodies he had, one dates back to the early 40s when he would have been in the Navy. In the "box o' pipe stuff" I inherited from my Uncle were about 15 blown out briar bowls. I'm not talking slightly cracked, I'm talking he smoked them until you could see through from one side to out the other the cracks and movement of the briar was so big. One even had a giant chunk blown out of the side. I can only imagine what it took to do that.

Im pretty sure I could kill a Peterson with my lathe, or band saw. But I dont think deliberate destructive abuse counts. Smoke it with little regard to how may times or how you light it (use soft flame only, torches are known to be abusive so thats out of bounds )

Well, my initial intent was to run at least a few hundred bowls through this pipe and see what happened. Problem: after one week, the pipe started smoking really wet. I used a lot of pipe cleaners yesterday. I did not have this problem when I smoked the same pipe for one month, but it was a Grabow, so the filter probably soaked up the moisture. I'm going back to my old rotation. This experiment didn't turn out the way I thought it would, but the information is good to know.

My first inclination is to suspect the moisture level of the tobacco for smoking wet, not the pipe.

The only known way to kill a pipe is a wooden stake in the heart...

Trying to kill a good briar pipe by smoking it would be like watching paint dry. As long as it is kept clean and baring any mishap its life is longer than most of us mere mortals will last. It may taste like crap but the smoke will go on.

I smoke the same pipe multiple times per day for weeks at a time, cleaning after each smoke, and have had no issues. There was a fellow on another forum that smoked one cob for a year, one Grabow for a year, and is currently working on one meerschaum for a year. So far, all pipes survived. Keep them clean and they'll serve for a good long time.
