Trying to figure out what I have. It is a Peterson's X105 but has "Superior" on the shank below Peterson's. I've not found any references to a Peterson Superior. Any thoughts?  |

I have not heard of the 'Superior'. I can't tell much from that photo - is that a foil-stamp 'P' or a metal inlay 'P'? Also, what is the stamping on the other side of the shank;e.g-'Made in the Republic of Ireland'? |

Strange... if you look at all the various links on the Peterson page one should direct you to every pipe (and info) the company has made. I would think yours is in there somewhere. |

I noticed the name Peterson is spelled 'Peterson's'. Not Peterson which is what you see on Peterson pipes. Nor is it in their logo design. I wonder if it is a different brand altogether?

The spelling is a dead giveaway. It's not a Peterson pipe. Likely a shop pipe for a Peterson's Pipe Shop is my guess.

The 'P' logo on the stem is fine, block letters is fine and the spelling of Peterson's is fine - I have probably 120 Peterson pipes at the moment, and many examples of all three. I also double-checked for examples of all three in my collection, as well as in Irwin's book.
So we're back to 'Superior'. I'll send Mark Irwin a link to this thread.

Sorry, it is "Supreme", not "Superior". Fault of a 65-year old brain. Thanks. I suspected it was a 'Supreme', but didn't want to contradict anyone, as I'd already done so three times I emailed your info to Mark Irwin, and he responded back that if we saw clearer photos, it would probably show 'Supreme'. That's a superb pipe - Peterson's top of the line. I only have one 'Supreme', and the grain and craftsmanship are fabulous. Peterson only did the metal inlay 'P' on their very best pipes, and you certainly won't find even a touch of filler. These days the Supreme has either a silver or gold band, but the "PETERSON'S" stamp in caps is 1950's, per Mark, and the 'Made in Ireland' stamp (no 'Republic') supports this. Great find! |

As the saying goes, even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut. I guess I wasn't totally blind as I knew Peterson made good pipes and I hoped the Supreme stamp meant it was something good. But I had no idea is was over 70 years old. Almost afraid to smoke it now. |

Just when I think it's all figured out. The Peterson web site says they began using "Supreme" in 1953. "Made in Ireland" was 1947-49. Yet, here is a pipe with both.

Found a history of Peterson that said the "Made in Ireland" in block letters was used from 1947-49. Hate to contradict people again, but I've seen that as well, and it's a flawed date range. I have many Petersons that do not follow the various 'Ireland' stamp date ranges. For instance, I have a 'Made In Ireland' stamped pipe that has a 1976 hallmark. The various stamps were around for many years after they supposedly (according to internet Peterson histories) were no longer used, and there was nothing to stop a pipe-maker from using whatever stamp he wanted. You can often match up silver hallmarks with stamps that don't make sense according to the dating guidelines. In particular, 'Made in Ireland' was often used at the same time as 'Made in the Republic of Ireland'. $125 was a great price. |
