I've got some close friends who have smoked CH for many years, and who are trying desperately to understand if this blend is actually being discontinued, or what the story is. Milan tobacco's home page says that as of just 3 days ago, their understanding directly from Middleton associates is that it IS still in production and that the shortage is a mystery. Anyone with any 'insider' understanding? I used to have an inside connection with a large US tobacco manufacturer, but no longer.

We were discussing this last night in the chat. The general opinion on the subject seems to be that the shortage is because a lot of people are panic-buying large quantities of it. No one had seen any "announcement" that differed from what you saw -- i.e., Middleton is still making it and intends to continue.

A lot of guys on other forums prefer Hearth & Home Mid-Town Chatham Manor. This is blended by Russ Ouellette to be a match. They also have a Carter Hall match.

Yep, I know all about CM, and my good friend is stocked up on both CH and CM. Just wondered if there was any actual inside hubbub. Thanks gents.

Guy hosting a livestream on YT just said the version he heard was they are going to stop selling pouches. Just tubs. And again, the shortage is due to panic buying.

A simple phone call will dispel this chitty chatter going around.

Sounds like the shortages of CH and PA may be related to the infamous Toilet Paper Syndrome a few months back, all the tales that I'm hearing contradict one another. Who knows WTF is going on. It has gotten to the point I don't know what to believe anymore, What ever happened to being honest about anything?

I am glad that I never got caught upon the hoarding process. Several years ago, I realized that prepping made some sense... really no downside to doing so. When the hoarding started up, no need to be a part of it.

When other people buy it all up, its hoarding. When I do it, it's just prudent planning.

That is funny, Jay!
I think that prudent planning by buying extra stuff on shopping trips to build reserves over time makes sense.
The people that break the system are the ones that either fail to plan for a rainy day or those that are speculating on shortages for profit.

I like to build up "reserves" of many things - ammo, reloading materials, various foods ..... It pisses me off when people act like I'm a hoarder because I planned ahead.

Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency for me.

I am happy to be the only one who has ammo! 😁 🤠 😜 Actually, I shudder to think about the ammo/person ratio in this six county area. Almost everyone carries and hunts.

Quite frankly, that's a big reason I own guns at all. I live in the middle of one million people mostly armed to the teeth, next to the continent's largest river, on a fault line, in a city not prepared for a major problem. Sooner or later, we're going to have a large-scale natural disaster that's going to drag on for a while. May not be till after I'm dead and gone, but that fault is going to make another nontrivial move sometime, and god knows where the Mississippi will start to flow.

I'm a few miles north. I'm familiar with the quakes of 1811/12. Mississippi flowed backwards I think. Correction: waves caused by the earthquake traveled up the Mississippi making it appear to be flowing backwards.Rang church bells in Ohio.

There is a legend that the New Madrid quake formed the lake near our house, but most geologists reject that.

I've lived through several earthquakes of over 8.0 on the Richter scale and have mostly good things (+90%)to say about my neighbors in the days after. The neighbors that have let us down were oddly politicians (system is too creaky to rapidly respond to a crisis, they take days to mobilize) and major chain restaurants/stores (those guys just refuse to help anyone and will totally price gouge). My experience for what its worth.

My experience for what its worth. I don't want to get all sidetracked and turn the thread into a History Channel show. But the thing that I would be concerned about in an earthquake here isn't so much the earthquake (though that would be pretty bad, given our high water table and loose soils), but the massive and continuous flooding that could ensue, making both egress and delivery of any kind of aid extremely difficult for quite a long time.

We’re all preppers to one extent or another. We buy enough food to “get us thru” and that will depend on where you live and what your needs are. Most folks around me think in terms of weeks and months where vittles are concerned. LDS folks (and there are quite a few in the neighborhood) think in longer terms. Others treat items like ammo and fuel accordingly. In these times in which we find ourselves it would be foolish not to look ahead and plan wisely. Just as the 2A was designed in part to protect the 1A, ammo is a tool to protect food and other essential supplies, as well as our own hides. And since I am surrounded by deer (and cattle and bison) it also serves as a larder-replinisher. To each his own.

I'm down to a couple ounces left in the tub. I use it as a mixer more than anything. I am still seeing conflicting reports about it ever being available again. Anybody know anything for certain? Have a couple pouches of Chatham Manor on the way. Hope it's a good substitute.

Not I. Last I heard, Middleton said they were still making and distributing it, and they were as perplexed by the shortage as anybody. But given how long it has been essentially off the market, now, I'm easing into assuming it's a goner.

This is disturbing news. Been smoking CH for better than 45 years and my lone remaining tub is ebbing quickly. Might have to look into the underground economy.

Contact info from another thread that asked about another Middleton blend: Prince Albert.

Prince Albert is NOT being discontinued
I called the John Middleton customer support number and spoke to a representative. While the vanilla and cherry versions of this legendary blend have been discontinued, the regular Prince Albert has not.
You can contact them yourselves, and I encourage you to do so, in order to show interest in this classic blend (hit "2" for pipe tobacco department):

FWIW, Smoker's Outlet has tubs. No idea how many. Maybe that means CH is not a goner, maybe it just means somebody found some more stock in a warehouse somewhere. No idea. But if you want it, they've got it.
