Sorry to read about a fake pipe but glad for the information! I buy my vintage pipes from restoration shops. Steve at rebornpipes.com (shamelss plug for a wonderful shop. Steve is a real craftsman and pipeman) He goes into depth on each pipe and posts the entire restoration on his blog which I recommend everyone should read from time to time. I get to see the pipe as it came to him, all the repairs are photographed, each pipe has a historical reference. When I buy a pipe I am assured I am getting what I paid for. There are many other restorers who offer great pipes at good prices as well. If I was to buy on ebay it would take a lot of diligence and I doubt I would feel comfortable until it arrived. Thanks for posting! Since I also restore and sell pipes, I only buy from Steve if it's meant to be 'permanent' and a smoker - so far I've bought four and I'm sure I will get more from him. I also sent him a pipe for repair when I didn't feel comfortable doing it myself. Now that I have the entire restoration documented, I would have no qualms about doing similar repairs in the future. He does great work and he's a great guy as well. For any rare pipe my verification process (assuming I know the proper stampings) is to look at other items the seller is selling (especially other pipes) - and try to determine if it makes sense that he would be selling fakes. You can also look at the seller's 'sold' history.

Went over to rebornpipes.com. The documentation of the work on the Canadian was outstanding. Amazing attention to detail and careful craftsmanship. Well worth a visit. Hi Plainsman! The reborn blog is fun to check and goes back years I think. Often a friend of his will post work so it is a great resource to see all manner of repairs and commentary over a profoundly wide selection of pipes. The store is almost an after thought as I feel all the real effort is to keep the blog going. I have a number of his pipes. Mid 70s GBD 256 canadian...lovely smaller pipe Savinelli Estella Non Pariel arcylic army mount stamped 9128. my wedding gift. pretty pipe. Savinelli antique shell 515, my daily warm weather workhorse Petersons XL13 kinsale bulldog, P-lip, took forever to learn the draw,
and a 1950s Castello SC-23 apple, I had to match my Kino searock GGG Lovat with a similar pipe from the old man Scotti.
As you can see I have a few of his pipes! My reasoning is/was that these are proven briars with no burns, well seasoned, cleaned, and frankly within my meager budget. Once I built my pipe set I have not regularly checked his blog. I switched to peterson spigots as my main rotation pipes with the others just filling in as needed. If he ever has a good spigot I hope to find out first but its all tenons and bents last time I checked. Anyhoo, I hope more members who are looking for answers about repairs and history of pipes go by his blog as I like the guy and know it makes him happy to help pipemen with pipe problems.

Since I also restore and sell pipes, . Are you sure? Your website is down. I started paying for the web-site in January and am overwhelmed with the thought of implementing my planned design. As a result, I've accumulated about 300 pipes, restored about 200 of those, and I've been slowly selling them on ebay. I want the web-site to be part history, part sales, part blog. I've done this before for a pre-wwi baseball card site and also for a pre-wwii Brunswick billiard site. So it will happen - I just have to get motivated.

I have made a few websites and after the first couple, I would rather go to the dentist. In theory it's easy, but there's always something making it not perfect.

Resurrecting Ted's thread (where is Ted, anyway?), I bought a Bentley from SP. Under "BENTLEY", it says "Former's Design". On the opposite side, it says "Swiss Made". On the bottom, it says "3-0-0.94 EXC".
The only information I've found is on Pipedia, and all it really says is Former worked there for a while and Bentley pipes were graded 1-5. It doesn't say which end of that range is up, but since mine seems to be a "3", it really doesn't matter. I have no idea what the other markings mean, though. "94" could be a year, I guess. It could also be a dozen other things.
Any of youse guys know anything about Bentley stampings?

Do the stampings match the serial number of the Bentley in your garage? They're nonconsecutive, dang it. That's okay. How does the Bentley (pipe) smoke? I remember Ted being disappointed that it wasn't a "real" Former. I miss seeing him here. Must've lost interest or real life got in the way. Hope he's doing alright.

Must've lost interest or real life got in the way. Hope he's doing alright. It just got here Sunday. Haven't had a chance to try it. It's got all the apparent qualities I like. It's light. It's a prince. It's got nice grain. Draw is free and easy. I think it'll be a good one. Yeah, Ted was good people. I miss his lunch dates with his mom. Like you, I hope he's well, wherever he is.
