Yes, nice. I was going to ask a question, but I'll wait and watch to see if you enlighten me in due time.

Looks like you're off to a flying start. Those handles are oak and . . . walnut?

As I am beginning to learn to actually use the forge, alot of what I'm going to be making won't be knives for a while. So, I changed the name of this thread to something more suitable. Up till now I have just heated and hammered a little, but today I got an idea, I could forge myself a set of runes. So I went to work cutting discs off of a school bus u-bolt and hammering them into flatter coins, then tried hammering a symbol into them, just for practice at this point. All three of these were different thicknesses to start out, and clearly my engraving skills need some work, but again, this was only a test.

Sounds like a good training idea.

It's not the traditional medium for runes, but I think it would be acceptable, and fun, and last forever.

Looks good Jason!
The blanks remind me of throwing knives. Something I have always wanted to acquire, but never got around to it.
I imagine that there are some good knife maker forums that are out there to give you good advice moving forward?

There are, I actually joined the American Bladesmith Society as well, so once time allows, there are physical classes I can take, and they have a lot of other good information on their site.

Hmm. "Discovered" metal plates with writing. Forget Oak Island, start a religion. You might need Huginn and Muninn instead of Urim and Thummim to translate, though.

Today's project was an industrial strength meditation bench. The whole thing was made from one spare 2x8x48 I had laying around in the garage. The design was based on one I saw elsewhere, but the original was made with 1x8, and was significantly prettier. But this one could survive being thrown off a cliff.

You can meditate way harder on yours.

Very cool! I think I have been meditating wrong. There's no wrong way. The bench is for kneeling, which basically aligns the spine for you. I also sit on a cushion, sometimes I lay down flat on my back, I just wanted to give this a try also.

The rods, screws, spacers, and plates keep my spine aligned, for whatever that's worth (not much, I think). You could make some excellent bonsai benches, I'll bet.

I tried to get into bonsai a few years back, but made the mistake of buying Walmart plants that had already been root pruned, and heavily. I still have all of the pots and tools, and one of these days I plan on taking another shot at it.

Bonsai taught me patience. Unfortunately, I lost some old timers in the last couple years due to my own immobility. Get a few cheap nursery plants and do nothing but leave them in the sun, water them, and look at them when you're out smoking a pipe. Then, in a year, start to play with them.
