I have a local buddy that was an Army Ranger and has served as a police officer for 30 years, an impeccable record and character beyond reproach. Some years back, he got a license to be an FFL, and I called him today.
Me: "are you still an FFL?"
Him: "No with the fees and the increasing regulations by the local authorities, it it became cumbersome and not worth it, it only make sense if you are a brick and mortar operation."
Me; "bummer"
Him: "When I relinquished my license, the ATF showed up at the door wanted all my records, sealed them up and put them in his SUV. I asked him where art the records going? He said did you ever see Raiders of the Lost ark, at the ended of the movie, a warehouse that seemed to be endless? yes, my buddy replied. That is our warehouse in Virginia, We take them in, scan them into the database, and the hard copies go into storage".
Me: "That sounds like backdoor registration which is forbidden by law."
Him: "Well if anyone has papered guns, it sounds right."

Conversely, years ago a son of an FFL told me that his father gave him a video to send to the ATF after he passed away. It was a video of him burning "the books" prior to his demise after a terminal prognosis by his doctor. He did everything legally, but wanted to make sure that there was no back door registration after the fact, since it was forbidden by law.
