So got a very pleasant surprise yesterday. I had picked up a lot of three pipes off ebay. According to the seller they were unstamped. Two Canadians and a half bent. I liked the looks of them so picked them up. With shipping $35. Well got them yesterday and after a close look thought I was seeing a stamping on two of them. After a little bit of clean up on the shanks, some good light and a magnifying glass was able to decipher the faded lettering. The smooth Canadian is a Charatan's Make Special, pre 1960, though I do think the stem is a replacement. The half bent is a Edwards. Really made my day. Was wondering what surprise any of you out there have had on pipes?

Nothing good, except for the Savinelli that one time.

That middle Canadian might also be an Edward's pipe. The surface pattern is reminiscent of a style done for some of the lower middle grade board pipes. It's clearly been handled a lot, though, so don't hold me to that. For the price, you got a really good deal. Good on ya!

Great score!
I had a great pipe from ebay - a Lorenzo Spitfire...probably nothing to write home about with respect to it pedigree, but it smokes well and only cost £5.

I started cleaning the third one again this morning just to see and have been able to pull out some stamping. Algerian Briar, with the name is Sando above it. Have not been able to find anything about a maker with that name. Anyone every heard of it?

Bought a pipe from Pipestud a while back that he didn't know who made it and it turned out to be a Grant Batson freehand. Really big surprise.

Thanks, took a look at Pipedia and www.pipephil.eu/, nothing on either of them. I did find that smokingpipes.com had sold a Sando Deluxe at some point in the past. Also the polish brand Balandis uses the term Sando on some of their pipes, but does not look like a match on the stamping or pipe style. Also it is a word in about 7 different languages so no narrowing it down that way either. I will continue to the search.

A fellow clergyman asked if I was interested in a box of pipes that he'd been given by a friend, an old Episcopal priest who was forced by a health condition to give up pipe smoking. He said he thought he wanted to smoke pipes, but it just didn't work out. I told him I would be happy to take a look at them the next time we got together. About three months later, he showed me the box. 16 pipes that looked as if he'd been storing them in a barn. I couldn't tell much about them and really didn't have time for a deep inspection. I offered him $100 for the lot, which he accepted. When I got them home and the first layer of grime wiped off, I discovered a '49 Dunhill Shell LB F/T and a bent, smooth Four Dot Sasieni Regent. Those two went off to Anthony Cook for serious refurb work. I figured they deserved it. I cleaned up the one Meer, a pretty beat up no name for last year's March Meer Madness smoking. The remaining 13 are waiting for me to bring them back to life. The $6.25/pipe became a very good deal after finding those first two pipes, even with the restoration cost.

Months ago I purchased a beautiful little 1920's Dunhill pipe case (no pipes). Two weeks ago I received a 1958 smooth 53 and it fit the bottom slot perfectly. Today I received a 1942 smooth Dunhill 56 in the mail, and it fits the top slot perfectly. I'm very happy (and surprised) with this result.
Now I just have to fill a few empty Peterson Patent cases.

I'd say you did alright in that deal, Kelly. Yes, it turned into a great deal. The 12 pipes that remain unrestored are good candidates. The Meerschaum cleaned up well and smokes just fine. It does have a crack in the shank in the mortise end, but so far it hasn't been a problem. The Dunhill & Sasieni both had stem damage that was beyond my comfort zone and they weren't "practice pipes!" Anthony did amazing work on those two. There are a couple of Savinelli and a Custom Built that may be up next, when I get around to it. The pickaxe looks interesting as well. Heck, they all do.

Yup, I was eyeballing that pick-axe. That and the full-bent billiard next to the Sasieni.

You did very well, Kelly. Talk about diamonds in the rough! Anthony Cooke, cooked up some fine looking restorations...I bet that was heel clicking time when you got them back. My rule of thumb is that when you see a well smoked pipe that needs some work meaning deep cleaning, cake removal, stem polishing...that means they were smoked heavily and probably pretty good smokers and worth the time worth cleaning and restoring...rarely have I been wrong in that regard. Obviously, some end up beyond ruin and are left on the shelf. Conversely, I have bought some "barely smoked" vintage pipes that upon my first bowl are gurglers.... A knowledgeable pipe repairman can sometimes fix them problems...and sometimes they know enough to tell you that they are un-fixable.

“Anthony Cooke, cooked up some fine looking restorations...I bet that was heel clicking time when you got them back.” Yep, Anthony does fine work. Both pipes look and smoke great. I am particularly pleased with the Dunhill as I’m fond of billiards. The price of admission was well worth it!
