I bought a couple tins, since I have some of the old Latakia Blend roll cake that used to be available in the US. This iteration doesn't have Syrian, though. We'll see what kind of a difference there is, besides major aging.

Maybe I should've said, "the old version had Syrian latakia, when it was available - It's not, now, because of war and genocide, which is a shame. This version has Cyprian Latakia. I wonder if there's much of a difference? We'll find out." Is that better?

I don't know what Frog Morton used, but it was great.

Brian Levine said that wars weren't responsible, more of an economic situation in Syria, deforestation of trees, lack of cultivation, etc... Not saying he is right, just that he said that.

I've heard this too, deforestation and desertification hit the industry hard even before the war. Frankly them Syrians need to sort things out, us pipe smokers are counting on them! I'm rooting for them, Pipe smokers for peace!

Well, the particular trees that they used were becoming extinct in the area, but the war was the final nail in the coffin. But yes, it was going away anyway.

I would trust TR more than P&C. Another reason why they shut down. Jiminks says Cyprian though...

I don’t have a sophisticated enough palate to taste the difference between the Latikia varieties but I definitely can taste the MacBaren topping in all of their mixtures that I just don’t like. If I was offered a sample I would gratefully try it but I really don’t like what I taste as a chemical Mac Baren flavor.

Maybe the diesel fuel off- gasses I that time?

I would trust TR more than P&C I had been off of P&C for a couple of years but their IPSD sale was too good to pass up. I took a chance with them and they came through with a perfect order at my door today!

I have probably 5lbs of Vintage Syrian in jars and a dozen tins of Lataka flake and rolls, a couple that have been opened and jarred for years aging in the davecave and I can still taste that topping. It’s not the worst thing I’ve smoked but I still don’t really like any of it.

Lol. A tin of that would be over $40 easily. Canadian government likes to tobacco block us.

I got two lat roll cake tins. Opened one. Is good. Smooth, not overpowering on the lat side. Is also very good mixed with vanilla roll cake.

I sent off an email to Per Jensen at MacBaren telling him and he is sending me a free crate of tobacco for my great suggestion. Stolen Valor! J/K

I ordered some, received it but didn't smoke some yet. I like to let the tobacco age before I open up anything, especially brand new released tobacco. From what I've heard, the Latakia content is not much more than the older Latakia Blend version, so it's more as a condiment than anything else, it seems. I'm sure it will still be a good smoke.

Fellas, and I mean this sincerely, I commend you for your patience. Maybe it’s because I’m not as experienced as you but I would have opened the tin, smoked a bowl before cellaring the rest. Guess I’m the “overly large size kid at a candy store.” Yes, trying to be politically correct. 😉
