This pipe was too cool to pass up, and it cleaned up fabulously. Here is a 'pre-clean up' ebay photo of it. The amber stem has the mouth-piece broken off, so that was going to have to be replaced. I dug out the remains of the bone tenon in the shank, and there was space for a rather wide bone screw - it was obvious the stem never went with this pipe. So I found a jewel of a thick bent amber stem that I had been saving, and sure enough - the bone tenon in the amber stem screwed right into the shank! So I'm polishing the amber stem...dropped it...SNAP - right at the bend. There was that wolf head, snarling at me! Since then, the wolf has been sitting in a box for a couple of months, waiting for a stem. Today I got a pile of bone tenons in the mail. ONE of them screwed right in to the stummel! And the other end screwed right into the end of a Peterson stem where the aluminum chimney had been. Not as great as the amber stem, but it would do nicely. So I got it attached and found that the stem turned about 1/3 turn too far to the right. The bone tenon didn't unscrew by hand, so I put a pair of pliers on it at the stem end and...SNAP. This is why I call this pipe the Pipe from Hades. I've never broken any pipe part up until I received this pipe - I'm afraid to let the wolf anywhere near my other pipes. And even after a nice cleaning and polishing, he smells kind of like wet fur.

Pretty cool even if it does smell funky.

Man that is one cooked meerschaum.. It really is. At first I thought it was intentional, but he has fine puppy teeth! It's going to be great once I finally get a stem attached to it!

Also, those are ebay pictures I posted, as I can't upload pictures on this forum. It cleaned up really nice but yeah, it's well-worn. The only parts that survived the years of heavy use unscathed are the recessed areas such as the teeth and the eyes. At some point I'll get my web-site running and I'll come back to this thread and post the 'after' pics.

Hades is a good moniker for that pipe. Something about it just creeps me out.

If I were a meer carver, I would try to figure out what it originally looked like. But I suspect it's creepier looking now.
We need a 'Creepy Pipes' thread.

Definitely creepy, possibly possessed.
